Inboard on Watkins

I have Watkins 27. The previous owner took the engine out (with shaft and bearing) and plug the hole. Painted over. I want to put some engine back. I do not want the original 1 cylinder engine. Any recommendations. What is the max hp I can put on this boat?

Sure you don't just want to use an outboard motor?
Would be soooooo much less money and work.

We have a Yanmar 2GM in our Watkins 27 and it performs very well.

Actually, in my Dana 24 which displaced 8,000 lbs I had a Yanmar 2GM20 which is 18 HP if I remember right. Likely about the same displacement as your Watkins. Very nice engine - highly recommend - and drove the boat along nicely.

I was a truck driver long some time and I learn to trust diesel engine. Have more torque power and last longer.
Now I have Evinrude 9.9 with long shaft, and that is good to cruise ICW or St.Johns river, but on oncean, my loose contact with water.
