Great Boats at Great Prices?

The OP started this thread with (among other things) "No, my boat had to be, at least theoretically, capable of a circumnavigation."

That implies offshore to say the least. I was simply pointing out that many of the suggested boats don't support the original intention of the thread.

I am following the thread precisely because it is (or was) about "blue water capable" boats on a budget.

That said, "capable boats" by itself in no way implies offshore capable. It might just be capable of sailing on a small lake.

Virtually no boat bought for a good price used is ready for offshore use, regardless of design. Tankage probable needs to be increased on most, at least those under 35'. It's easily done. Other modifications are probably necessary as well.

I'm partial to the Pearson 365 Ketch....but I guess I should be- because I own one!

That said- they are easy to find- they made lots of them. The prices are usually reasonable, they have lots of tankage, they are roomy, they are tough (I learned this the hard way by not heeding a forecast.... once.- Lesson learned!), even has a separate walk in shower (nice touch for a boat less than 40')

That said- any boat you buy repeat ANY used boat you buy will need work before you head off 'out there'. It just will, no matter how well it has been looked after. It's a boat. And, another great reason to give any used boat a good going over is so that YOU know YOUR boat. No substitute for that when you're all by your lonesome and things need fixing (insert Murphy's law here).

I also came across a wise comment that resonated when I saw this boat.

I will Paraphrase and add a bit to remember:

"With a budget boat, you are buying a Diesel engine with a boat thrown in. Diesels are very expensive to replace. So make sure the engine is working!"

This boat has a 44hp Diesel engine that has only 660 hours on it and has a Racor filter. That is worth noting!

My girlfriend and I are looking for a live aboard and I was very excited to find this blog/thread. This boat looks amazing, but might me a little small for the two of us. The hunt continues for now! Hopefully we will find our dream boat soon.

Last time I checked the listing I think it showed sale pending.

There are lots of ways a boat can be great. But you are right that there are bargains in the older boats. Buy the hull, engine, sails and rigging. Cosmetics are easy but time consuming. One I'd like to find is a Rhodes 41 (60's) admittedly very "old school." There is a Columbia 26 MK1 in the classifieds being given away ("3 boats in Maryland") and that is solid little pocket cruiser.

I've been following this thread for awhile and I think it is great. I don't anything about this boat but thought it certainly deserved a mention here. It's a Halberg-Rassy Rasmus. It's certainly capable of offshore work, this one was has been across the atlantic at least once. $30,000 is the asking price. If I was in the market right now, I would certainly be interested.
