Galley Counter Top

I spent alot of time and effort to try and improve my galley, it could not be improved......it was so bad I had to remove it and start fresh. With a 4'x8' space to work with resulting in 24"x18" to stand, 4'z8'x4' 24" U-shaped 24" counter.

I agree with Dockhead: Corian has so many great qualities, it is a natural choice. Typically solid surface is ½ inch thick, but there are some that are ¼ inch thick, too.

I bet recycled glass would look damn good in the galley. If you can find the right pattern that is. Not too sure how durable it is, but for the price its a good investment.

Corian 1/2 inch ,heavier than the formica ply that i removed but but probably not much more ; totally satisfied.
Cosmetics count too.I bet it is less heavy than granite and less brittle too.

my counter top is made of antique, priceless gouged, stained and worn formica, color white ith multiple stains. foogly. havent decided yet what will replace the loveliness of damuglystuff....is tbd.

Our galley has ceramic tile for counter tops. It was installed by a PO. Thought it was a bit odd at first, but I've come to love it. Tough, easy to clean, heat resistant. And looks great.

My galley top is .10" stainless steel. The boat came with plastic laminate that was totally shot. I stripped it and patched the plywood substrate with epoxy. I did a careful CAD drawing of the piece needed and emailed it to Stainless Steel Fabricators. Stainless Steel Fabricators: Custom Stainless Steel, Steel, and Aluminum Fabrication It came back in two weeks and fit like a glove. I glued it down with Dow 5200. They have made other parts for me and IMHO do very good work.

I was going to go with tile, but then figured if I drop something two things break, what I drop and the tile...not to mention problems with flexing and vibration. I ended up going with tongue and groove cumaru...the wood was easier to install, warmer and cheaper.

Has anyone tried Silestone? It's a resin composite that look like granite. We have it in our kitchen at home and it is amazing. It doesn't stain like granite and isn't heat or cold sensitive. I have no idea about its flexibility. We put tile in our last boat and other than a couple of cracked tiles I loved it.

sunchasrer if you go for it--please keep us posted as some of us havent figgered out that part of the boat yet..lol

and i dont have to worry about flexibility in my heavy displacement cruiser galley....lol

Hey wolfenzee - Im really interested in this option. Im assuming you used solid boards, not laminate? Is it sealed? If so, with what? What kind of maintenance are you finding it needs?

I know a guy that just put butcher block in his boat. He got the counter top from Ikea for a real good price as I recall and it looks great.
