Re: Challenger 32 ?

I just bought a 1970 Challenger 32 today. It's on the hard and ready for new bottom paint. it's not in too rough of shape but she could use some work. I know this is an old thread but I'm hoping some of you still own and sail your Challengers. I'm very excited to find one of these as I'm looking for something strong with lots of interior space. I'm going to be moving aboard in June and I have a few months to get her back into the water.

Could I possibly get an invite to the Challenger Only Club?

Hi Wandering Mind,
We still have our 1973, great boat.
Where are you located and what do you have to do to her?

Re: Challenger 32 ?

I'm in Portland, Oregon. She has been on the hard being prepared for new bottom paint but the previous owner had to move to California and couldn't finish the work. The hull has been sanded down and the blisters cleaned out. The blisters are ready to be filled and new paint put on. The engine runs (Atomic 4) and the interior is fairly good shape. The cushion covers could use some work and the headliner needs to be redone. Mainly just a few cosmetic repairs and she will be back on the water. I'm looking at rewiring everything with LED lighting and new batteries with solar panels. I have a lot of work ahead of me but I've been dreaming about this for years.

Re: Challenger 32 ?

Our baby has been on the hard for 5 years whilst we built our cabin in the woods but we are now working on getting her ready to cruise again.
Have you sailed yours at all?
The main work we did on ours is to raise the boot stripe a foot and, most importantly, to add a foot on to the tail end of the rudder.

Re: Challenger 32 ?

I haven't sailed her yet. I've sailed on friends boats when I lived in Seattle. I don't think I'm going to make any changes just yet. I'm just trying to get her back onto the water with new paint. I'm going to focus on filling the blisters over the next couple of weekends and hoping to start the new paint in about 3 weeks.

Re: Challenger 32 ?

Hmmm, maybe in 3 weeks we'll be down to 3 feet of snow and above zero C temperature :-)

Re: Challenger 32 ?

We just had 6" of snow a few days ago and it's gone today. It's a blistering 10 C outside right now and the snow is gone already. I'm motivated to get her back on the water as she needs just a little love to be beautiful again. I'm planning to sail out the Columbia River and up to Washington and spend the summer in the San Juan islands.
