Catalina 22 hull #135 What is the significance?

I have acquired a 1970 Catalina 22 with a hull number 135. I was told that the low hull number boats are lighter weight by 250 lbs or so and are highly sought after for those who race these boats. Is this true? I have to move to Iowa and I guess will need to get rid of it and I did not want to rip myself off too bad by giving it away. Thanks!!!

Phil, In regards to "very tender" what does that mean? What is mostly in the keel? the mass?

Re: Catalina 22 hull #135 What is the significance?

Hi,
If you go to Catalina22.org, confirm what I remember reading, which is that the MkII model of the 22, introduced in 1995, is the model that weighs more. There may be small differences in other years, but that is what people are referring to. Catalina Yachts even responded to input and started building a "Sport" model after that to get back to similar characteristics to what you have. The keel/centerboard boats are more desired by racers than keel versions.
As far as "tender" goes, it's basically the "Tippiness" of the boat. It has to do with keel weight, depth of that weight, beam, amount of sail, height of mast, etc. Sometimes it refers to initial heel, and not whether it will flip over. Of course, like in racing dinghys, they will and do flip over, but you'd really have to work at it or be very unlucky in a Catalina22.
It's my dream boat, but can't be in the market for one.

Re: Catalina 22 hull #135 What is the significance?

Thank you guys so much for the information!
I have never sailed a later model C-22 and so I have nothing to compare it to.
I may just leave it out here in California as Iowa might be better for a john boat and crappie fishing!!

Re: Catalina 22 hull #135 What is the significance?

"Highly sought after" is maybe a bit much. The earlier versions have some advantages in racing, some proven, some not. The version without the pop-top has a better layout for leading lines aft. The older mast is more bendable and more desirable for racing.

The condition of the boat and equipment is the biggest factor in its value. There are also maintenance items like the keel pivot, winch and hangers that also add or subtract from the value.

They're fun boats to sail. We love ours. Is it worth towing to IA? Maybe...
