Cape Dory 33 Just Sold on eBay

I am curious to see any reactions to this CD33, which wasn't perfect but was at least afloat, going for about $20k. I would not have thought of getting one for that, and am somewhat surprised it wasn't set up with a reserve price.

Of course, I know that upon seeing it in person, my view might change dramatically. Like I said, just curious, and what better place to seek comments that amongst this group?

This was discussed on the cape dory forum and the general consensus was that the boat is in really bad shape. If I remember right, one of the people on the forum had actually seen the boat and recommended against it. The feedback from the buyer the first time this was posted was very negative claiming that the gelcoat was very crazed. The seller claimed that the buyer was crazy and hard to deal with. Given the wording of the ad, I am inclined to think that the buyer is the one who is crazy and that the boat isn't worth even what it went for.

Well, Klem, I think youre right on this, and the story just gets "better", now that I have poked around on ebay a bit. The seller, sailer6364, had it sold for $27K in an auction that ended on Feb 8th. That lead to negative feedback for the seller, as the buyer wrote on eBay that it was mis-represented and in poor shape. Apparently that transaction didn't close, and the subsequent relisting ended in the early morning today, Feb at a price of $20,200.

When I go to the bookmark I had made, the listing is still there, now marked as ended. I believe eBay postings last for a while after an auction closes, and have used expired auctions often to judge the market for something of interest to me. I can't explain why Anjou, and likely others, can't get to it, but I just did look again at this one as well as the first one ended Feb 8.

Hi Ho.

The boat showed up on craigslist as soon as the latest ebay sale closed. Something really strange is going on. I wonder whether the seller bid it up themselves. The craigslist ad even offers that the seller can help finance it.

This exchange sure points out how easy it is to be a laptop detective these days, thanks to the modern internet. Fun. Scary.

Im so wary of scams.
How do you know if A, the seller bid for himself just to push up the value or B, he sold it once on fleabay and then tried to sell it again on craigslist.

Ive known farmers to try and sell the same lot of potatoes to two different buyers.

On ebay if you were a bidder or had the item watched then you can call it up again after the bids close. Other follks won't be able to access it.

The seller was pretty stupid if s/he bought it from himself on eBay. By posing as another and buying it from her/himself the seller will incur final value fees from eBay, which could be significant. He should have set a reserve or ended the auction early. Ending the auction early can draw the ire of eBay if there are bids, but a "no-foul" if there are no bids.

As an update, it is back but under a different seller's name. The new seller only has one piece of feedback and it is from the name that it was previously sold under.

"Q: A nice boat like this really sticks out on ebay, and i have shown interest in this boat in the past, yet this is the third time i have seen it listed. Twice in Nettles island florida and now in Lutz, fl under a differnt seeler name with the same contact information. Makes a person a little stand offish about making a bid. Is it two deadbeat bidders in a row? whats the deal? Please dont take this the wrong way, i just want to make a bid but i am a little gun shy. ThanksFeb-23-10

A: its still in nettles island subject to two deadbeat buyers the last did not have there money in place i re listed it for my husband due to him haveing to go out of town for a few days and lack of good internet access in the islands he will return wed. Thanks"

So Looks like the wife bid up the boat and now she is trying to sell for hubby.
