It depends does the Nina have a fin, full, or long keel? I hear you can actually use a barn door for a rudder on that one!

Is a boat like that safe to take on the ocean? Or would I have to spend too much money on upgrades just to be safe?

Enterprising men have taken to the sea for a few hundred years in just such a vessel. As a matter of fact, many a fortune and barrels of grog have been consumed on a fine sailing ship such as she.

Your wife is to be commended for her fine eye in seaworthy vessels and she may be delighted to find out it can be a real money maker, in the hands of a captain willing to sail and conduct business as in the days of old!

The previous owner mentioned he left a map hidden somewhere on board. It has an "X" on it, but he claims that's just the location of one of his favorite cruising spots. The parrot on his shoulder started squawking something, but he promptly shot it.

Let me know if you find the map.

Sir, when you look in a mirror you are the walking definition of a "pessimist".

Now, calling leaks showers? That is the definition of a "boat broker".

Sailing a wooden boat will surely lead to your death, go ferro.

The Caravel was the better exploration boat for two centuries and it was a very sound boat. It had a good ruder even if in a storm it was needed several men to take care of it. The keel was....a big log. Compared with today's sailing boats it was incredibly small.

So true. Freight charges have really been crippling the price of spaghetti over recent months.

Gnocchi is all I can afford these days.

Re: Blue Water Capable Or Am I Crazy?

I would love to buy that boat and outfit it with about 8 M134 mini guns on each side, hidden behind doors. Then take a nice sail up the Somali coast and when the "pirates" pull up alongside, jump up wearing my tricorner hat and say, "AARRRRGGGHHH Mateys! You call yourselves pirates?? I'll show you what a real pirate is sporting!" Right then, we drop the 8 doors and fire up the mini guns for a little target practice.

I'd catch it all on video for Youtube, of course.

Never really thought about it before but ferro would be a great defence against small arms fire for those wanting to shoot it out with Somali pirates.

Re: Blue Water Capable Or Am I Crazy?

Could you even insure a boat like that for a crossing?

Where would you find replacement sails?

Any heads or plumbing? I doubt your wife would be happy using a bucket...

Saw an article in Woodenboat about a boat like this (the skinny one with no deck) hitting 13 knots on a trip from Ireland to Denmark or Norway. Find out the PHRF rating before putting any money down.

Good ships here. They visited my marina and got to walk around on deck.
