BLACK BOTTOM PAINT MAKES CABIN HOT??

hey guys..

almost ready for bottom paint.. I was chatting with one of the guys at the boat yard he said he heard that painting the bottom using black paint made the inside hotter..

obviously it makes perfect since that if for some stupid reason you painted the deck or some area exposed to the sun it would be hotter..but the bottom?? maybe if you were shallow and you had light reflecting off the bottom, but even that seems like a stretch..

anyone ever had experience like this when they changed color??

would you like to buy a bridge? I would only worry about this if you plan to spend a lot of time up side down. Perhaps if you sailed a long time healed away from the sun but I doubt you'd notice.

Yes, it does ... if you use two part black epoxy paint, and it last somewhere between 5 and 30 minutes ...

Only a problem when the boat is upside down. Then the heat is the least of your worries. Chuck

Black bottom is a solar heater for an inverted cat in cold climates......is sop:-)

Forgot to add...in tropics, use white to keep cool for same inverted cat....

bottom, topsides, deck, whatever....if it move salute it, if it doesn't, paint it.

Some people like black because it hides the slime. For me, it's easier to scrub the bottom if it's blue.

Did the boatyard guy tell you the advantage of painting it black after you told him you wanted to paint it blue? Welcome to the marine service industry. Motto: "The customer is always wrong." If you'd told him you wanted black, chances are he'd have tired to talk you into blue. And tomorrow, he might try to convince you to go with red.

Just remember the simple rule: if you are willing to pay for it, then you must want something else.
