Did you really just "tossed up" or did you go with the Red because it is really "more proper"?

I do hope it was the latter!

Regardless, the red looks great and to my eyes, way more nautical

I am a rebel at heart . It was tempting to exert a bit of Aussie independence (as much as can be done while still flying a flag with the union jack in the corner) and hoist our national flag, as we have the option of doing. I think I will do this in the South Pacific, but will stick with "more proper" while in Europe.

The late evening light turned the entire seascape to molten gold, which must have delighted Arthur, the photographer. It was close to 10pm when the second photo here was taken:

She is a thing of beauty, a functional work of art. May you both have many years of peace, adventure, some excitement and lots of pleasure with this fine vessel.

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Nice photos SWL... a stunning boat as we all expected, ever since the photos of piles of pre cut aluminium plates first appeared.

So, how does she sail? What are your reactions to the reality of getting to know her habits?

And were the "off ship" photos taken with a drone... especially the one looking down the mast?

What fun you must be having!

Wottie, I just checked out how improper it is considered to fly an Aussie blue ensign. In fact the contrary applies. The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia state:

"It is recommended that private pleasure craft wear the Red Ensign in home waters but use the National Colours when overseas".

Not so.

As per the official Australian Government Flags Booklet part 2 https://www.pmc.gov.au/resource-cent...oklet-part-two

FLYING THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL

FLAG AND RED ENSIGN ON SHIPS

The Australian red ensign is the flag to be

flown by Australian-registered merchant

ships. Either the Australian National

Flag or the Australian red ensign can

be flown by government ships, fishing

vessels, pleasure craft, small craft and

commercial vessels under 24 metres in

tonnage length, but not both ensigns at

the same time.

We fly the blue Aussie flag overseas because it uniquely identifies us as Aussie and eliminates much confusion.

Hi Jim
She is a quick, responsive boat . Easy to sail two up, more so than expected given our winches are all manual.

I was amazed that a drone was not used at all for the photos. Arthur was initially on a small chase boat and then literally jumped on board with his camera case while we were underway. We hoisted him up the mast while underway as well. Gybing didn't phase him. He had obviously done this before .

It also took much longer than expected - close to three hours. Conditions were perfect and we had a very enjoyable evening with one of KM's technicians on board (a keen sailor who had fitted most of our deck hardware). None of the photos were staged.
