Average Mono Size for Cruising

I have found the average age thread for cruisers interesting and thought I'd start one for the average size of monhull cruisers out there. My new boat is 42' and yet to go splash. I was interested in a comment by a friend with a similar size boat who said 10 years ago in the Pacific 42' was a large boat for cruising. Now he says he's amongst the smallest boats out there doing it.

Please let me know, if your out there cruising or intend to be, what size is your boat?

Re: Average Mono Size for Cruising

I started cruising in 1990. At that time I had a 36 and a 38 was considered the optimum size for cruising. Well 20 years later it's changed a bit. I now have a 39, a beamy 39 but most of the boats I see are bigger than mine. It seems 42 is the size now. By the way, I don't think the sizes listed in the survey differentiate enough. It should be every two feet not ten. There is a lot of difference between a thirty footer and a forty footer.

Re: Average Mono Size for Cruising

25 yrs. back the average cruiser(sailing) on the east (US)

seemed 30-33 feet and the larger sailers were 38 to 42 feet, but there were precious few over 40. There was a very extensive survey at that time that confirmed that most all world cruisers were in the smaller sizes. Wish I could remember where this survey was published ,lotsa interesting other satistics regarding crew composition ,costs, rigs, etc. etc.. Maybe it was in Cruising World, since in those days they were much more of the Good Old Boat persuasion and had not yet sold out to the big advertisers.

Re: Average Mono Size for Cruising

My first boat cruising around the UK with my Dad was 21ft. My own first boat was a 26ft 25yr old Colvic. In the interim, I had chartered and skippered 36 to 42ft boats, my GF loved the boats in the Med or the Caribbean. The Colvic she graced with one visit, way to small she says. Digging very deep into savings I bought a bene 473, lovely she says, until that that it is we go to sea, way to rough around the UK.
But for me, the B 473 is a lovely boat, handles bad weather with no problems, bags of room, and fun to sail in most conditions

Yes, I think the ranges should be modified. I felt guilty voting in the 40-50 ft range because of an extra 6" on deck, but it is what it is.

No, I did put a 0 - 30' box but for some reason it didn't come out that way. Maybe I've done another typo. Maybe the moderators can add a 0 - 30' box because I certainly meant it to be there. Maybe it's a conspiracy and the moderators deleted the 0-30' box???

Rampant Boatism....
Is this what our ancestors fought two World Wars for....
One could also claim sexism (boats are 'she') and length disability prejudice...

Re: Average Mono Size for Cruising

I cruise a 26' tender known as a Haida 26. All 50' yacth's should have a 20-30' tender on deck. What do you think about that??????????
Michael.....
