Defacto, most boats up till 80'ies or so are double-enders - just look at their waterplanes, they are same whether a d/e boat or not. How the topsides come together aft is of little significance, much as it may give some aesthetic impressions, or not.

It was only with the racing crowd that things changed.

yeah I don't think Noah much cared about sailing quality, with God as your gps and autopilot I doubt he had much to worry about.

The video at the end of this link says it all. What a ride. (And thanks to David Wiencke of Westsail Owners Association for posting it on the WOA website.)

But it is flat water. Get off the lake and into the open water and a double-ender loses much of its charm ;-(

Sexy? Yes, about as sexy as Queen Victorias bloomers. There's no doubt a double ender / canoe stern is very attractive but its in an old fashioned and definately not sexy way.

IMHO of course.

Actually, if you are to use that type of analogy, a double-ender is more like a thong, whereas a transom stern is more like bloomers...

I have to say it...I could stare at that stern a life time. That's about how long it would take to pay one of those off!

Hmmm.... I believe said bloomers just fetched 10,000 quid. Doesn't make 'em sexy but sure makes 'em expensive. And obviously someone was attracted. Weird person, what?

Re: Are Double-Enders the Sexiest Monohull Design ?

I have a Creala 40 which is most definately a canoe stern. I take the view that its a 37 foot boat with the rest of the hull left on. All i can say apart from the asthetics, which i do love, is that a couple of months ago off the Oregon coast in 50 knots and with a following sea which looked higher than my house, we did not take a drop of water over the stern. I must also say that i did have to work at keeping it pointing in the right direction on occasion. Whether this would be any better if i cut three feet off the arse is a moot point but i don,t think it would really do a lot of good. What I have noticed is that the wake I leave behind is virtually non existent compared to any other boat I have owned. All had transoms. The creala is a Taiwan built Crealock 40.

Here is a 39ft Gartside yawl under construction at the Jespersen yard in BC. Will look better with some ballast - nice rear end.

Wink Re: Are Double-Enders the Sexiest Monohull Design ?

Very nice loooking boat. I can't accept that a sugar scoop stern would take less water and be more bouyant than this rather round derriere. Lets face it the sugar scoop started out as a canoe stern, had three feet cut off to make a transom and then they add insult to injury and cut off the bgloody transom as well. I suppose this is progress of a sort.

Clearly bought by someone who has a bit of cash and thinks double-enders are sexy
