Water Spouts Off Nanaimo

Saturday November 12th here on the Georgia Strait we had a weather occurrence that was pretty interesting. It was a windy day with gusts to 40 knots but suddenly her in my house on the hill the air filled with flying debris as winds went to at least 70 knots. It probably lasted an hour and took the power down. Apparently at the time a seaplane was on it's way into Nanaimo when he saw what he described as a wall of water. He turned back to Vancouver of course. The paper reports water spouts up to 200 meters.

I did a little research and it seems water spouts are a regular occurrence in the Strait. In February of this year 5 were spotted by the light keepers at Barrier Island. Here's a news report on those:

Re: Water Spouts Off Nanaimo

Very interesting; as a resident when the "Black Friday" tornado hit Edmonton, I had no idea that tornado type phenomena could happen in a cold environment.

I had always thought that it was the formation of thunderstorms, which usually mean humidity and warm weather hitting cold weather in the upper atmosphere was the cause.

who said ye were mature---you own a boat????? if so--you're just old......
..we were lucky in GOM --we had lightning storms and more of em and day and night-- but we didnt encounter any waterspouts, despite some of our friends having done so. we saw theirs begin to form from afar....they were about 50 miles from us. we were too busy to watch.....
