San Diego to Tahiti

I am in discussions with a couple who want their newly acquired Herreshoff schooner delivered from San Diego to Tahiti. I am very familiar with the boat and have plenty of time on the Pacific, but I have never made the crossing. Any advise would be much appreciated.

Re: Looking fo some advise, San Diego to Tahiti

My friend just got to Hiva Oa a few days ago; was stuck in ITCZ for almost a week. It's a hell of a long trip, you're going to put the boat through its paces, and where you're going (the Marquesas) isn't exactly a yacht mega center. I spent 30 minutes on the phone with the DHL guy and he couldn't even find Atuona (or any variation of the spelling) in his computer.

I do deliveries but I wouldn't solo that route. Take someone that you would feel comfortable being master.

If I'm not mistaken your weather window is closing in you as well. Hurricanes hit Mexico starting in June so if you're not in the ITCZ by then you're flirting with danger. Next window is January or waiting again till next spring.

My $0.02. I can give you the email of my friend who just got there if you send me a PM. He's on sailmail so coverage is shotty.

Re: Looking fo some advise, San Diego to Tahiti

G'day, mate. San Diego to the Marquesas in 22 days aboard our Mason 53. It's almost the same distance as going from Cabo. 70 hours of motoring time. Left the 2nd week of March and arrived the first week of April. Pretty easy passage, settled into our routine, starboard gybe to the just north of the equator and then over on port gybe the rest of the way. Like Rebel said, your weather window is closing, unless you are prepared to possible deal with passage involving a hurricane. All the best. Cheers.
