San Diego to Points North

Does anyone know about a safe passage inside of the kelp beds that surround point Loma? It seems like if you want to get anywhere North from San Diego tacking around these kelp beds adds on another hour or two to your trip. I am thinking of taking the dinghy on a reconnaissance mission but would rather not risk the breakers.

I used to dive on the inside of the kelp alot off of my avon. It seems like it could be done if the swell is small but I never thought it added that much time to get to the outside.
