I dunno. I think Tao Jones was correct, and I wish I'd have stopped reading after his post. The rest was clueless bravado. I've been on the forum long enough to see at least a dozen big bs guys come along, tell us what's what and then disappear. I doubt they're all in Papeete.

I used to have an Able 20 that I lived aboard. I called it Tahiti Tom. As a joke. In reality, there wasn't enough room on that boat to hold the beer I'd need for the trip.

Oh yeah, and not much room for the Insatnav/Iridium/AIS/watermaker, etc etc ...

Many CF stories AND $3.25 will get you a beer in most bars in these here parts.

Re: I Want to Sail to Tahiti

tgzzz,

What you type is very true, but there are exceptions to the rule. He did make from the east coast back to the west coast of Florida. Unfortunately he took good advice as criticism, and that was his loss.........i2f

Re: I Want to Sail to Tahiti

Im not a psychiatrist or psychologist but ...that guys got a serious attitude. So he's skydived, climbed a mountain, and crawled in a cave so that makes him qualified to singlehand a 50'er to Tahiti. He is a chef too which is good on a cruise. Alrighty then... Guys I just bought a plane and have flown it...well never. I'm gonna fly it to Tahiti. Anybody want to go? Right.

Seriously though, I'm all for dreams and making them happen; and I DO wish him luck, but I personally would never cruise with a person that exhibited that TYPE of self-minded, overly cocky, self-righteous attitude. He needs to get over himself, STFU and listen to people FAR more experienced than himself.

Bottom Line: He's dangerous to himself, his vessel, and his crew. Just look what happened to Goose on Top Gun?

Quite right i2f. And I don't wish bad luck on anyone, even bs artists. Note on that trip, he lost a mast. I mean, no big deal, right? I kinda prefer MarkJ's story of losing his forestay and NOT losing the mast, but that's just me.

I know a hellava lot of really competent people. None brag about it.

This is the gods' truth: We had a guy show up here about a year ago. Big boat but a regular guy nonetheless, scuba instructor so he came into my shop, and long story short after a few weeks it seemed to me that he had to have sailed RTW and he admitted it when asked. That's not the story though. The story is 6 months later we all found out the guy has also climbed Mt. Everest. And we found out only because someone saw him in a North Face ad.

Here's dessert: unlike Chris's story of meeting the blonde in KW, my buddy meet a real babe in Panama. He was headed west and she wanted to go as crew. There was a Swan on the dock that was blocking the view of the buddy's Pearson Vanguard. When the gal started to board the Swan, he pointed out the reality ... she turned and walked away.

Hud3 called it: arrogance pure and simple.

Fantasy: 1. Idealization of perfection
2. Something not real.
Sometimes arguements are what you make them. I was on the guys side the first few posts, but he seemed a little overly sensitive to being poked. And I don't see how picking up a "blond" makes one a better sailer.

Everyone has a dream, I too have a dream of sailing to Tahiti someday. Right now my imediate dream is selling my gas guzzling power boat and buying a sailboat. My next dream is learning to sail such boat competently enough to sail from Texas to Florida, but .....Tahiti someday.
