Re: When Is A Boat A Boat, And When Does It Become A Ship?

According to my daughter it's a ship if it has a "Twirly Thingy" (Open array RADAR) on top.

The above is the answer I have seen and liked the most.

As far a subs go, the reference to them as boats is historical (early 1900's) from when they were a lot smaller and the terminology never changed.

I am thinking about taking my 18' kayak out to my boat/ship/yacht (I call her Chanticleer) Saturday morning so I can be lazy and not have to haul the dingy/skiff/tender/boat over to the town landing.

just sayin?

I spend a great deal of time kayaking, and I do at least one multi-week international trip every year. I don't know any serious kayaker who doesn't call his/her boat a "boat."

You want advertisements? Both my boats are Eddylines, so I jumped on their website to see what whether people are using the term "boat" to apply to their boats. Guess what? Almost every kayak owner who is quoted in the ads uses that terminology.

Re: When Is A Boat A Boat, And When Does It Become A Ship?

I run a boat that is definitely a boat that leans outwards on turns, planing or not. So that definition can be untrue.

Our "boat" is a LLoyds registered ship.

So - how about the "ferryboat YORKTOWN" Boat or ship?

Re: When Is A Boat A Boat, And When Does It Become A Ship?

If it looks anything like mine, it's a BOAT.

If I can't afford it, it's a YACHT.

If I'm afraid of being run down by it, it's a SHIP.

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

Got me thinking.......

A Ship is a vessel that needs crew.

A boat is a vessel where crew is optional or "only" very useful.

exeptions apply

I can't afford a ship.

All ships are boats. But not all boats are ships...
