Re: What is Your Ideal Sailboat Length?

You should clarify you question a little...

Ideal length means different things for different people...

Ideally, I would like a 35 foot racing Sailboat, a 50 foot cruising boat and a 25 foot day sailor....

Well if your boat is 300 x the weight of the admiral while she is trying to cleat off when 20kts is trying to blow us off the dock, that is enough of a challenge for now. I voted for 40 - 45 foot on the hope that she can grow some biceps.

Enough for a little Jersey cow. I wouldn't take a goat to sea.

Re: What is Your Ideal Sailboat Length?

Well, I've always said that 32-36 is the right boat for me. I've sailed on boats from 8' to 55' and owned from 22 to 42. What suits me is something that I can single hand easily when needed.

You didn't have a category 32-36 so I answered the 30-34 category.

kind regards,

Re: What is Your Ideal Sailboat Length?

My rule of thumb is every boat should be able to be handled by half the crew
a boat with 4 should be able to be handled with 2, 2 with one and a boat that is single handed should be able to be handled with you at 1/2 your capacity.

Actually, I was thinking we should get a bit more technical than that. Give me a boat with a D/L ratio of 186.08 and a SA/D ratio of 18.15, and I'm a happy camper.

Re: What is Your Ideal Sailboat Length?

Dear Skipper John Thank you for the info. I am going to put this out there for everyone.
I would like to have a boat big enough to put my Harley on it. When I say that I mean have the means to lower it into the below deck area in its own area/garage so there is no issue with gas fumes. The boat would have a tender instead of a dingy, shallopw draft so maybe I could have a stear like a landing craft. I am building a 1 inch equals 1 foot scale now, or when I get back from Australia. Also if anybody is sailing from Australia to India or the Med after the first of the year, from Australia, let m e know. Thank you

I wondering why you need to run the harley in the cargo hold? A tread mill for a paddle wheel maybe?
