What are the three things about your current boat that "made" you buy the boat you brought.

If you had your time again what would you take off your must have list??

interior space
cockpit space
low maintenance construction

wouldn't take anything off a "must have list" or it would have been on the "like tohave" list (which always has things on it)

Other that since you "still looking", don't get all caught up in analzing everything, get a boat for the 90+% of your planned use and work around the rest of the time

Capability to safely cruise worldwide. Sized appropriately for single-handed cruising, without being too large to intimidate a beginning sailor. Decent price.

I could afford it........

I picked the general boat I wanted based on:

- What I could afford
- What one person could easily sail (and still have it be fun)
- The smallest I thought two could comfortably live on

I picked the exact boat I did based on:

- Great looks
- Reputation for seakindliness and good sailing qualities
- Reputation for quality

The only one that has changed for me is that I would now put less weight on reputation for quality. This is because wilth more experience, I now have more confidence in my ability to assess quality and amount of work required to get a boat up to snuff than I did when I bought my current boat.

Interesting twist on a boat topic. I have two,; some would say apples and oranges. One is a Hunter 40.5, the other an Alden 50. Long irrelevant story how this came to be.

To the point,

wife liked both,
interior space,
quality and value for the $$$,
ease of maintenance (only the Hunter),
and most importantly, fit to our desired cruising plans.

I wish I could get a list of people who would honestly answer this question with "the boat I have" or "a newer model year of the boat I have." Would live to see a list of the boats those people own.

1. Rugged build and reputation for seaworthiness

2. Size and price

3. Simplicity of deck layout and systems

Originally my my minimum size was 35', but if I was to do it again I go down to 30'.

Just going through this again now:

1. The lady would live on it (space & environment)
2. Effort under way
3. Reasonable speed and motion comfort (see #1)



Safety & maintenance effort are just little things I want ...

#1 Large enough for the wife to put a beach chair recliner on the deck (for drinking her fruity rum drinks with a bendy straw)

#2 In my price range (with concessions for #1)

#3 Enough staterooms for the wife and two teenagers


If I wasn't married with children I would have bought the same boat for different reasons.......
