Well, up here mostly for bear protection and hunting during the season (about a quarter of the year). And I keep them in my house when I'm not onboard.

Don't want to argue the function but mine has been bored and relined with a 4140 steel sleeve and has been tested on targets 10' away with a 2 ft. spray pattern with 1 oz of #3 shot & half load of powder. In the old days we would fill the black powder shotguns with rock salt to run off the neighbors dogs from the hen houses.

The day after 9/11 I took off with a friend (ex master sargeant) on my then, yearly San Juan trip. We had approximately 5000 rounds and half dozen long guns, just in case the natives got attacked again...didn't happen. Always go to Canada now, hence no need for guns, keep them locked up at home.

If that Dave is me then shucks thanks. I'm a big gun owner hunting sporting etc. Just I have no truck with the " personal protection" argument I've seen too many cases of people hurt over it.

As someone who will likely spend 95% of my time cruising in USA waters, it's not the pirates that I'm concerned about. Have had my house, boat, and truck broken into, all on different occasions. It's well know the boats are regular targets for thief's to steal from. I have insurance to replace the items that some drug addict may steel from my boat to pawn for his next fix. No amount of insurance will replace my family. Don't understand why people see a difference protecting my family in my home versus my family sleeping on my boat at a marina.

Ted, from my perspective the argument isn't about boats versus home. I own guns but I live in a country that manifestly forbids their use as " personal" protection. They only have sporting uses. It would never occur to me to use them in the confines of my family home and in practice removing them from a safe removing trigger locks loading them would make it a practical impossibility in most cases.

As to a boat I can see no practical use. Other then scaring away people who would probably run once I appeared anyway. But I will admit this is a very non US based opinion. Equally the practicalities of cruising with firearms outside the US means that in reality it's virtually impractical to do so ( and remain within the law)

I also have been subjected to crime , house broken into three times and two of my cars over the years were stolen and burnt out not to mention several smashed windows

This isn't a pro/ Anti " bear arms" issue it's perspective that armed untrained civilians ( ie untrained in combat) are more a danger to themselves then anyone else . Very few people can engage in any sort of a firefight or reliably mortally wound someone. If it happens it's usually luck unfortunately more often it's unlucky.

As I say it's a practicality issue not an ideology one.
