These things are the best bug killers of all time. You open one and leave it in the boat when you leave for home. There will be NO bugs when yo get back. You will have to air the boat for a few minutes but thats a small price to pay for no bugs. I have no doubt I will be growing a tail or a 3rd eye but I have no bugs. I change mine about 4 times a year. No roaches no spiders, just no bugs.

Do I sound like I have bugs? Yup especially spiders............m

I am not sure it would work in a boat, but in my truck (semi), I spray a little WD40 in the cab, just a sort blast works, I also do it in my house. It works for me, I live out in the woods and have no need for anything else. No bugs,spiders or anything, also kills some undesireable smells too.

Starter fluid is generally ether, and very flammable. Not my first choice to spray inside the boat. WD40 works for everything, but it will stain wood.

OK if you don't want to use the all natural enviromentally friendly hedge apple you can always use what I use..... an Ozone generator. o3 will kill everything, mold, mildew, bugs. It does not support life. Yes you do have to air out the boat but it smells great, just like after a thunder storm.

The problem with Ozone, is that when you can not smell the nice "rain" smell anymore, it can kill you too. Around 4 ppm is fatal as far as I remember!!

Make sure you have a meter on the generator.

Works great to keep toilets smelling fresh and getting rid of bad odours in cars as well.

I got interested and started reading more about it, after seing this post. Here are a few things I learned. Apparantly, one of the advantages is that you can smell it way before it reaches 0.1 ppm. Syptoms of exposure between 0.1 and 1 ppm are irritaded throat, dry eyes and headache. Symptoms of exposure between 1 and 100 ppm are asthmatic symptoms, tiredness and lack of apetite. It's been used for more than 100 years comercially and there has never been a death reported due to exposure. In 1997 Ozone acquired GRAS status (Generally Recognized As Safe) for use within the food processing industry by FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in USA. It's not recommended however to stay for an extended period of time in a closed space with the generator running, even if the values are way below 1 ppm.

Although expensive, I'll buy me one to get rid of the slightly moldy smell onboard. One of the greatest advantages, as far as I can understand by reading about it, is that it doesn't only kill the smell, but also viruses, bacteria and mold. So with a little luck, it will also rid me of the root of the smells. Any experiences on this?

Ozone which i O3 quickly breaks down to O2 so it does not have a lasting effect. So if you just switch off the ozone generator and wait 5-10 minutes it's safe to enter.

That is why it is "safe to use" in the food industry, in fact it is preferred for sanitizing applications like for water, as it leaves no taste, and does not create carcinogens like using chlorine does. The down side is that it has no lasting effect, so it can not be used to clean out pipe systems.

That is why you see the UV lamps placed at the "point of use" These create ozone that sterilises the drinking water just befor you use it.

Hampus, there is a company in the Malmø area manufacturing these units, just don't remember the name.

Doesn't ozone attack and age rubber and rubber-like materials? I think I read that somewhere. If it does, hoses attached to seacocks, fuel lines, and electrical insulation might be at risk.

Yeah, I used to think that but I figured out it must have been spiders that started that one. I have spider spray aboard but usually deal with them by waiting till dusk and, when they come out to play, I catch them and hurl them overboard. I don't have any down below any more since I stopped throwing the sail cover into the saloon when I went for a day sail.

What kind of spider spray? I wait until dusk when they come out to play. When they reach a critical mass (once every couple of weeks or so) I then freak out and grab a can of Muskol and go postal. Problem goes away for a few days and the cycle repeats.

I kept a Panda Quantum "Classic Marine" ozone generator going pretty much full time on my last boat for about 3 years . I didn't notice if it had bug repelling properties yet we didn't have problems with bugs inside during the time. Being in Louisiana windows and doors were usually screened when open.
I have read about rubber deterioration so I did my own very "scientific" test, I placed a common wide rubber band at the discharge of the ozone generator and left it there for about ten days, no damage! I ran the unit at the medium setting.
I do believe they work well to keep odors down but that is hard to prove, kind of like elephant repelling bracelets.
