Or perhaps he is just ahead of his time. In WWII, large bulbs were attached to the front of ships containing submarine detection hardware. As a side affect, captains noticed better fuel efficiency. There was a production sailboat, from Scandinavia, with a bulbous bow (Elvstrom?)

Anyone else remember it? Mid seventies, I think...

I think the problem with it is that it only works well (in terms of cancelling the bow wave) at one speed, so it's really not suited to sailing vessels.

You could optimise it for different speeds, but it would have to change shape and size (no grubby comments, please!)

It's simple really. When he wants to scrub his hull he just hooks up his air hose to the tank. That's why the tank is installed in the bow - best place to start.

Well, bugger me! (to use a quaint Antipodean turn of phrase)

We tied up alongside this exact vessel, when we passed through Gisborne NZ a while back, and made desultory conversation. As I recall (and as the boat's name suggests) they were Aussies. Good blokes and sheilas, for all that ;-)

We never suspected it was 'packing' any appendages. Very discreet ...
