Sometimes life is like that...

So, on Saturday, Princess Lisa & I took a drive out to the boonies to attend an auction which included a significant number of boat parts... a lot of the stuff wasn't of any interest to us (although there were some great bargains, for example if you wanted new or near new Lewmar winches). Having looked carefully through all the boat gear, we selected a small number of lots that we though we would bid on. Well, as it turned out, although lots of the items went for absolute peanuts (#1, #3 & main for a 34' boat = $100, for example, mainsail of a 65', in good condition, $120, etc). The items that we were going to bid on went for way way more tan we wee prepared to pay. So, with our tails between our legs, we headed homewards.

On the way home, we stopped at a the local tip (municipal dump), and had a wander through the tip-shop (i.e a little shop where they sell stuff salvaged from the tip-face and stuff handed in). We walked out with an almost new (possibly brand new, certainly very nearly new) prop! The prop is identical to the one on our boat; a Barret Autostream, 2 bladed feathering model. They don't make them any more, but even the shaft taper and keyway look the same (I'll have to have the boat out of the water out of the water to verify). And the cost: $AUD15 ($US12).

See; what you lose on the swings, you gain on the roundabouts!

Nice find on the prop Weyalan. I don't understand auctions. Lori does though. Sometimes there's a fever in the air and people all of a sudden just forget all sense of what it is they're buying. They get their minds set on an item and will pay more than it is obviously worth. We've seen this a few times. Me? I get a figure in my head and stick to it. When that number is reached that's it.

Yeah; Auctions sure are funny things. Some old stuff that got sold went for more than it would have cost to buy new, and some that was pretty good didn't get a bid...
