Something to Play with for Beach Potlucks that Leaves Something Good Behind

I wish I had known how to make this back when I was cruising. It would have been fun to do and a way to re-purpose some trash.

Here's a slide show of a burn.

Picasa Web Albums - Jen - Biochar Produ...

The burn lasted for over 13 minutes. The flames were intense and there was virtually zero smoke.
I think it would be pretty easy to cook a meal with a few burns. Certainly could boil a pot of clams in a hurry.
With some extra fuel and a second lower can, it could be kept going as long as needed.

The stove works by the process of pyrolysis.

If extinguished when the flames go out it leaves behind Biochar.

Which evidently is one of the main ingredients in Terra Peta

All very interesting stuff. But mostly just good clean fun with fire.

In light of the recent interest in energy conversation.....

Here's one constructive way to cut your power consumption. It may be a small thing, but it's better than just complaining about things and doing nothing to help.

Here is a video of my latest TLUD. I'm burning coconut fronds.

From cooking with a 5 gallon can TLUD

Big oil is evil. The people who want to put up the windmills in the northeast are ruining the view. Blah, blah, blah.

We need less talk and more action. Personal action. Even in small ways. If we wait for the powers that be to solve our problems, we are doomed.

Unplug everything when not in use. If you multiply all the electronic stuff that uses power in standby mode by all the households in the world. That's a lot of juice.
Turn off the AC when you aren't at home. The cat's will be just fine. And keep it at 80 degrees when you are at home. If that's too hot. use a fan or two.
Collect rainwater. Save the water from the shower warmup to flush your toilet. Put a bucket under your AC condensate outlet and use it for watering your plants.
Compost.
There are so many little things that we can do. There is no excuse for doing nothing.
