The problem with generalizations is that they are generally wrong. I've felt incredible friendship from all type of boaters and been annoyed by all types too.

I grew up sailing and now have a trawler. It fits our lifestyle. I think I'm considerate of others and we certainly anchor much more often than we're plugged into a marina. I run my generator about 3 times every 2 days and never at night.

Of course, I also hear the whirs of multiple wind vanes throughout the night. It's not a pleasant sound - be honest about it.

The realities are that people pick their boat for a lot of reasons. Some argue that a sailboat is more reliable - others like the guaranteed performance of motoring. It cuts all ways. If you decide to cut out an entire class of boaters, you'll surely miss the opportunity to make a lot new friends. For the most part, let's face it, we're all in this together and it's always good having others to help out when you need it.

And if we must hate a single group, can't it be the sport fish boats?

Actually, the problem with generalisations is that they are usually right. That's how they get started.

There are always exceptions...

Are sailers cheap or are some things just over priced? I was quoted $1000.00 for a new bobstay not long ago. In fact you can ask my wife, she'll tell you I payed too much for the boat and just won't stop...hehe. Oops I bet she's reading this.

I will take HS up on the carbon credits. My main is about 35 years old, of heavy dacron and still sails well. My jib is the younger- probably 25 and floats just fine. How many carbon credits do you think I need? BTW- I bought the boat a year ago. Put 13 dollars of diesel in and still trying to get it low enough to put some more in. So do I still need carbon credits, or do they expire after 10 years? Do I get negative carbon credits for using my bike?
Inquiring minds want to know....

That's like you are damn sure making solar panels and wind gens creates no waste, no pollution and no earth deterioration. Sure using a solar panel is a green way to think, but how green is the production process?

Then there is the pollution we put in the water - I have seen way more sailing liveaboards than motoring. Now the sailing ones will spend months in anchorages polluting them every day with what comes out of their toilets, showers et cetera. a power boater will come for a weekend perhaps and then head off home where his waste goes thru a sewage treatment plant before it reaches the river/sea.

Not that I think these two examples are facts, but just trying to direct your attention towards seeing the pollution issue in a more global perspective.

When power boaters give me the gears for any reason, I just chuckle and tell them that I have a problem. My 20 liter fuel tank is still 2/3rds full from last season, and I'm afraid the fuel may be off. That usually shuts them up.

Ok, which one of you superior sailors want a sailboat to leave a port, and come to sea to rescue you when you are 500 miles offshore. I want my powrboat friends on that job.

How about "Do Yachties have sticks up their a____e"

I did a thread here a while ago on the powercat I am building

The areas it will be in either have zero wind or heaps so sailors tend to do a lot of motoring anyway.

It has similar sized powerplants as the sail version (65hp x 2)
10 knot cruise
approx 1L/nm(1 engine @ 8knots)
$50 to 70k (cost of rig, winches and sails) to spend on fuel

That works out to around 2 to 3 circumnavigations
or probably 10 years of fuel in asian waters (our intended area)

It will also have a large solar panel array

Boat type does not matter

The whole thing boils down to does the crew of the boat have common sense & courtesy? If so they will be great neighbors, if not it could be a long night or some of the funniest s..t you have ever seen.

I think we all can start by realizing our planet has limited resources, and make a conscious effort not to waste them. For me, its a sailboat. For someone else, it may be a raft with a steam engine.
Lets all try to help each other rather than over ecologize them.
My last post may have come off as arrogant. I was just trying to tease. Please don't be offended at my poor humor.

Great point

In various studies carried out by the European “Crystal Clear” Energy Commission, one square meter of completely manufactured solar cells can cost from 75 to 314 kilograms of CO2 to produce. The report goes on to indicate that installation of these cells can cost 600 to 3,140 kilograms of CO2 in sunny regions, while the number go up to 6,280 kilograms in cloudy regions.

Aluminium for masts?

It turns out that converting bauxite (aluminium ore) into aluminium metal is the most energy-intensive industrial process in the world, that aluminium producers use more electricity than any other industry and are significant contributors to global warming and environmental pollution and degradation

If we exhale CO2 (and I still don't believe it's a "pollutant", more an economic opportunity for algore's carbon trading scheme but I digress), how many months, years etc, is that square meter of solar panel equal to in a human's breathing terms?
