Sailing from Sag Harbor to Block Island

Hi, I am sailing from Sag Harbor to Block Island on Sept 22 on a Catalina 34 if the conditions permit. Am hoping someone can answer a few questions:

Is it possible to leave around 8am and sail south of Gardiner's, stopping at Montauk for an hour and then carry on to Block or is that risking sailing too late into the afternoon?

What is the weather usually like in mid/late September? Is there a possibility of hitting fog?

How rough can things get during the crossing if there is _no_ small craft warning when sailing a 34? Might be an overly vague question but curious how a 34 would fair - have sailed mostly 45s-50s

Any guidance is gratefully appreciated

Thanks, Colin

Re: Sailing from Sag Harbor to Block Island

The trip is quite easy if you have winds from anything but the eastern quadrants and a foul current. BI is about 10 miles from Montauk and so that's a few hrs. Getting in and out of Montauk in a hr leaves you little time there I think. From Sag to Montauk is about 15 to 20 miles and if you go south of GI you shouldn't see any big seas... but if the wind is blowing and it's against the tide you can have quite the ride. I'd figure 6-7 hrs in ideal conditions.

Thanks for the info. We are planning on doing the return leg the next day straight forum Block to Sag going north of GI. Any advice on that route? Thanks again.

I've done this a hundred times.. I usually to for the 1GI north of the ruins... but it's a beat down to Sag usually.
