Re: Port Authority will not allow rat traps on docks?

When our house was in a more dilapidated state... we had a brief problem with rats. Long story short: our big tomcat wasn't a deterrent. The buggers finally poisoned themselves when they found where I had stored warfarin-based poison for an earlier mouse issue. I also had the pleasure of dispatching two in my composter with a pitchfork.

I would guess that rats are a public health problem so if it's public knowledge that a marina has a rat infestation, the owner/manager would be legally obligated to deal with it.

Around the yachtclubs in my part of town, we have a thriving wild mink population. And no rat issues.

Once... our boat was a short-term lodging for a family of raccoons, when I left a hatch undogged. Thank heavens I discovered'em before they really started setting up home. Was kind of fun coaxing the raccoon mom to carry each kit away to a new spot.

Warfarin.
I knew I'd seen that name on TV for people medicine.

Sure enough, it's a blood thinner to prevent strokes, heart attacks etc.

No thanks, I'll take my chances !

It's their property, file a complaint for unsafe conditions with safety health and welfare. Most gov't agencys hate unsafe claims on their record.

when i was still working icu an demergency and pacu, i would administer med... with the coumadin, aka warfarin, i sed you need your dose of rat poison and we would all laugh.
yeah but to kill rats is more than ye would take for anticoagulation. it is also the poison most often used on rock rats, so cats and dogs get to bleed out in front of ye when they consume it.. ugly and nasty/
i keep my cat on my boat so he wont get into that stuff. no rats so far..knocking much wood as i typo

Re: Port Authority will not allow rat traps on docks?

I had a rat move aboard during a short stay in a marina. I tried a number of trap types with no success over about three months and finally had to resort to baits. I kept a very close eye out for carrion blow flies and by observing where in the boat they were congregating was able to zero in on the rat carcass before disposal required a biohazard suit and breathing apparatus. It was a very close run thing though.

I admire Formosa boats but didn't realize there was room to keep a car on board.

I believe everyone possible should benefit from Tax Dollars spent, so here is what I have to say:

Rat tastes just like squirrel--yeah, I did....SERE school, 1983. Rat trap with peanut butter. Yep works on squirrels too...

Fry 'em up in some sort of fat, coated in the same thing you'd use for chicken, and make gravy with the drippings.

God, sometimes I realize I'm not normal...

Your recipe is of some interest, mostly because most Chinese recipes for cooking rat call for it to be soaked in water, for a long time, before cooking.

Care to comment?

Lived in various SE Asian countries where rat was on the menu but NEVER sewer or dock rat. The only rat eaten by those cultures were field or rice rats considered much cleaner more along the lines of squirrel.

Different strokes for different folks.

I like more BBQ sauce.

Not different than chicken, fish, steak or pork. The difference is the eyes , tail and feet are still attached.
I went to a Chinese wedding once in Chinatown NYC and they served shark fin soup, pigeon (with heads/eyes and feet still attached) etc. I tried it all. Food preference is learned and cultural.
For the past 4 years I've chosen a fairly strict plant-based diet, mainly for the health benefits, but the ethical and environmental issues are also worthwhile considerations. The environmental impact of farming meat is much greater than farming plants.
