See, very easy if you don't know a certain acronym, initial or abbreviation to ask for clarification. I have done so several times and always got a prompt, polite answer. No much trouble at all.

By the way, to the OP. I concur, the post and request was no trouble at all and IMO (in my opinion ) was a polite question. But it did start an interesting conversation and you did manage to flush out one reply (a very uncharacteristic reply) that was not exactly nice.

I've changed.

My initial response to this thread was along the lines of "just educated yourself, its not hard. Takes me less than 5 seconds to select a term (eg. IIRC), google it (like this), and scan the results to find the expanded version... and now im educated for life!.

However, I've just posted a couple of other posts and found myself expanding my internetisms. This thread has gotten to me, and i've found myself empathising with the fact that this is a sailing forum.
Techy forums are more ofey offay orfa... <googles> au fait with these things.

His example was RPP though - something hard enough to guess at, even if we did have context.

All acronyms (yeah yeah, i know its not technically an acronym) are ambiguous... its context that allows you to understand what is being said...

Knowing that it means Registered Pension Plan doesn't tell you much unless you happen to have one. Those of us who don't are none the wiser for having the definition. Like Registered to, by, or for whom? What does it do? Turns out that there are some in Canada (and maybe the US, I quit reading). It is a pension plan for employees that is accepted by the government wherein both the employer and the employee get deductions. FWIW (Oops, sorry Richard, I put in the FWIW (for what it's worth) because I thought it would be irrelevant to many people (those disinterested in pension plans or having other forms.)

Yeah, based on these posts, I think the OP has made it pretty clear what he meant, once people made it clear what they thought he meant.

Which is, IMHO, how good communication should work: if nobody checks whether message received = message sent, and corrects it until it is, it's not strictly speaking communication.

I guess it qualifies as intercourse, though, or some such.

I hadn't in mind the 'internet shorthand' (as example, LOL, KWIM, WTF, etc). Those are rather easy to figure and/or of lesser importance. What I meant was of more importance than that. I had in mind the oft esoteric nomenclature of various disciplines, ie, trade associations of which understanding is made more difficult by using abbreviations. As example, an engineer speaking to another engineer can happily use the talk of the trade all day long. But that same manner of speech would not translate well to the layman. All I was asking was for all of us try to be relatable in the means by using full spelling.

I know I could bury others in abbreviated trade talk. Yet what have I communicated. Being relatable to your audience is No 1. I suppose that does present a burden to some but I would say they do not care for their audience as they insist on their way and place the burden of communication wholly on the listener.

Heck, I have no idea what context RPP was used in. Perhaps it is short for Rest in Peace Pussy. I didn't believe the pension plan reference was applicable on CF, but perhaps that was the discussion. My point is there are various acronyms, shortened terms, or abbreviations for use in many applications. The same collection of letters may mean different things in different contexts.
