A huge dock torn from a Japanese port by the 2011 tsunami has washed up 8,050km (5,000 miles) away on the US West Coast after crossing the Pacific.
The 165-tonne structure made of concrete, metal and tyres, and studded with starfish and barnacles, arrived on a beach south-west of Portland, Oregon.

You know I saw this on the news yesterday. I was out in the ocean there about a week ago. It would have really spoiled my day to run into it! I am guessing the Columbia river outflow kept it away from the Washington coast, so we are getting trashed south of the Columbia and up by Alaska (where that boat showed up). Apparently the outflow of the Columbia goes west and north, swinging up to the Straits of Juan de Fuca.

Check out the NOAA visualizations video,it shows projected path and bulk of tsunami debris for next few years.Planning on returning to PNW via Hawaii,looks like 2014 is safest time for passage.

This news story has lots of pictures.
After next week I will be helping deliver a 36' sailboat to Puget sound from Portland. Then end of July I will be taking my sailboat to Barkley sound from Portland for 5-6 weeks.
This makes me a little nervous. May be this year I will day hop up the coast.
