My Own Webpage?

I am wondering what you Guys and Girls would recomend as a good free site to start your own sailing webpage?

Secondly, is it worth doing, or should I just keep posting my adventures on Facebook?

At the momment I am sailing back and forth around the East Coast of Australia, surfing, diving and fishing. When the boat is ready I hope to do a sailing surf trip around the Pacific.

Thanks, Shane

Re: My Own Webpage?

What type of information are you looking to put on there?

There are many types. A basic format would be this one: bumfuzzle | living, sailing, procreating

Then there's this blog kind:

We're Back! | The Hynes Honeymoon!

It all depends what you are trying to achieve.

Personally I find the Bumfuzzle one a pleasure to read and I don't have to click on "old posts" or tiny fonted links in order to find what I want.

Re: My Own Webpage?

You can set up a free website at Wordpress.com, or blogspot, pretty quickly. I'm more familiar with Wordpress, and it's pretty easy to set up and get started with a large number of free templates you can use to customize the look of your web page.

Thumbs up Re: My Own Webpage?

Thanks for all the replies.

It is probably going to take me a while to have a good look at the options.

Google Sites.

It's free and has no Google Ads (usually the price of other "Free" Websites). Slight downside is that not all singing and dancing on features (although for me that has plusses!) and I don't find it intuitive (but could be just me!).

Can use far better looking Templates than the boat one I did, but am kinda stuck with the look I have until I rejig the photo layout - which to be honest, timescale wise will be around about never.........

There is also tumblr, which is the easiest of all of the blogging systems to post to, they also allow custom domains free of charge

Re: My Own Webpage?

We just started one on blogger. Why knot?

Our rationale was it would be much better to have a blog our friends/family could read at their will than to pepper them with emails/facebook updates/etc.

So far the biggest issue I'm having is playing with the formatting/layout etc. Like anything, I'm sure there will be a learning curve and it'll take some time of playing around with it. But once we are cruising, and we are sans internet so I'm not wasting all my time on internet forums!, I'm sure I'll figure it out more.

Good luck!

I use sailblogs especially the special feature of having a map and tracker so our family and friends can keep intouch with us and also have a better visual picture of where we are

+1 for Blogspot. I've been using it for a couple years but not much recently. FB is much easier but of course you can't do as much.

Re: My Own Webpage?

Hi Shane,

I'm an IT dinasaur but I found most of the usual ones like blogger were limited if we wanted to have different sections or categories.
I got lost trying to get my head around Wordpress, although it seems popular and good once you've got it worked out.

We eventually went with www.weebly.com.
Could not have been easier or more logical and totally free.
They have a step by step process to build your site, almost like playing with leggo, and we get plenty compliments on how good and professional it looks.
Just love it when a system does the hard stuff and I get the credit

It's below my signature if you want to have a look.

Let us know what you end up choosing.

Vic.
