(I have no idea on the demarcation line that marks the "Southern Oceans").
It's not a secret; but the term is often miss used by the unknowing masses

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Ocean

The Aussies claim it starts at their coast but that's just them playing geo-politics. Most scientific types seem to agree that the convergence marks the boundary.

Thank you Chay! Interesting bit of info I was definitely misinformed about. I think the confusion may come from those of us who follow the Vendee Globe & other big ocean races where the term is used frequently but obviously not accurately. I suppose it's still OK, however, to use the term as more of a descriptor.

Re: Jeanne Socrates Oldest Person solo RTW attempt

The Southern Ocean is the 'newest' named ocean.
It is recognized by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names as the body of water extending from the coast of Antarctica to the line of latitude at 60 degrees South (which is also the limit of the United Nations' Antarctic Treaty).
The boundaries of this ocean were proposed to the International Hydrographic Organization in 2000.
Half of the responding countries supported 60° South while only seven preferred 50° South as the ocean's northern limit. The IHO decided that, even with a mere 50% support for 60°, since 60°S does not run through land (50°S does pass through South America) that 60°S should be the northern limit of the newly demarcated ocean.
However, since not all countries agree on the proposed boundaries, this has yet to be ratified by members of the IHO.

It's just not how one goes about what Jeanne wanted to do, to me. Which I think means efficiently, not driving it "too hard". She does have to factor in time for rest, though, I grant you that.

Ann, there isn't a gate at Cape Horn that opens on 20th December and closes on the 30th.
You leave when you leave and you get there when you get there. Good chance of getting a smack west of the Horn whenever you are there... look what happened to Jeanne in 2010/11.
That trip saw her leaving the Falklands bound Capetown in April 2011 ( eeek!!!).
I was at dinner with her at a mutual friend's place in Stanley shortly before she left.... she insisted that you could not cross the Indian Ocean to Australia in winter.... I said that you could.. you just had to stay further north esp as she could stop in Fremantle etc etc. Not sure what she did in the end but it shows that people can have differing views on what is and is not possible and desirable.

I believe the reason it hasn't been formally adopted is due to South Koreas objections to the naming of the Sea of Japan. They want it named the East Sea and due to this dispute, the 2000 report was never adopted. I may be wrong, but that is the story I remember from a few years ago when they tried to resolve it at the UN.

I still like the image of folks catapulting margaritas out to me!
I hope she keeps on going, who really would deny her the title she seeks, or for that matter just the record of the accomplishment, for just stopping for repairs? I guess it does lose the added drama and marketability if it can't be sold as "non-stop" but really, do we need her to do this foolishly?

Is Jeanne underway? She doesn't have a tracker, does she?

(My ham radio abilities are rusty/non-existing, otherwise I'd try directly...)

Saw her on Tuesday.
Jeanne is in BC for Christmas. The boat is in San Diego. She said she will try again next year, but will leave earlier than she did this time.
