Re: I'll acknowledge the elephant in the room...Full keel is dead... ssb is dead...

There is some truth about this thread, but not all. American are conservatives to say the least, and I believe they are the only one to build and buy full keeled boat. Caliber and Island Packet are still alive. But all other modern builders have developped modern boat design, with suspended rudders, wide sterns, fin keel, and wide hull to accomodate boating requirement of the 21 first century ideas, technologies. Speed and comfort, and security of the new designs have left the 'traditionnals' boats way back. But Ham radio, is fun. Other electronics I would never do without like AIS, EPIRB, electric autopilots, etc. are also product of the evolution. I remember a time when sailor where doubtfull about furling sails, electric windlass, and light displacement.

Re: I'll acknowledge the elephant in the room...Full keel is dead... ssb is dead...

I love it! Fun post and a bit of truth in all of it. I've done it old school and new school. Miss some of the old but progress marches forward.

Next boat I build/buy.......disposable electronics.

We've been shopping and it's fascinating to see the change in Nav Stations from just a few short years ago.

Some of us still are, and prefer our vessels tested by the rigors of time, not just the number of bareboat charter berths and an advertising budget. Even catamarans (which even the most devout will admit had problems with seaworthiness not too many years ago) are now divisible into categories not unlike those of monos (folks, I am not discussing comfort and speed alone) as far as sea worthy, or not, in places when the sledding has become tough.

Me, if I am going to be caught where I do not want to be, I much prefer it be in a boat in which I can be hove to as a solo, still manage the sails on both masts until they are furled and bagged, and have a reasonable expectation/hope she will right herself and the leaks will be relatively minor if things go in the dumper and I have prepared well, providing there is the right blend of luck and competence. No, I am not against an electric windlass, or even furling head sails, but I do not like light displacement unless I was racing, which I no longer even think about except one on one against a similar boat.

Re: I'll acknowledge the elephant in the room...Full keel is dead... ssb is dead...

Check out "catamaran storm tactics" on blog.

I had a Crealock Dreadnaught 32 and a Hans Christian 43. Did the "heavy time". Rather than wait out the front passage hove to I'll just as soon sail with it/out run it.

As to SSB even in 05 our sat phone was more useful.

We used the SSB for the net but most of us were emailing each other even back then.

Times are a changing ;-)

(Still carry my sextent, tables and paper, just in case)

Which hull number for the Dreadnought? I have an enhanced dated base on a crashed computer that I will someday recover, and would like to add/update the info. I cannot recall how many of the 83 hulls I had identified, but it was more than on the Yahoo group etc. or any place I could fine. Please include name (history if known), year, and rig, and who built out the hull if known, plus anything else you want to include (e.g. Saab engine- which most were -or). I am sure you know the drill. Thanks!

Delorme in reach, we were able to communicate, via email text, messages. Obtain weather, anywhere, and it worked flawlessly for us in 24 countries. 48 hour battery life, waterproof, and you can take it in a life raft. Kind of hard with a ssb, also iridium go, and even sat 0hones are easier and cheaper now
