Wow. This is an interesting thread!
A boat we were looking to buy last year had electrified lifelines. We thought it was totally ingenious. The original owner was a German engineer, and we didn't know if it was one of his "inventions" or if it was a common practice.

Thought about doing it on the boat we bought!

But, since we have two Chesapeake Bay Retrievers weighing in at 100 lbs a piece, we figure that might be all the deterrent we need!

It's makes me wonder how the whales are being affected.

Whales may also face liability if they cause unnecessary damage or injury to the would-be burglar. It would naturally come down to their testimony and credibility. But whales are pretty gentle and pretty credible, and they could always eat the perp if things get out of hand...

Of course, if you can afford to hire whales for security you can probably afford a pet alligator, which might be even better.

In all seriousness, man-traps pose major danger for their owners - both legal and physical. The main problem is that they cannot discriminate between a threat and an innocent and they cannot apply proportionate force.

For example, what if the boarder is an elderly gentleman with the coast guard auxilliery on legit business and a totally unforeseeable electric lifeline breaks his pacemaker? What about an child selling bananas who then drowns? What about some rich yachty with a litigious family who drunkenly dingies up to the wrong boat?

Hired whales are a better option. Anyone serious about this would need to consult legal counsel in the area where they operate, which might be more painful than an alligator bite.
