About Beaufort has been negative because of the crime rate
What do you think?

Re: Hilton Head Sailing

The currents, shoal water, and narower waterways of SC present some challenges, but there should be plenty to see and do. I am usually offshore through that section, but being from the SE I have spent time in all of these areas one way or another. People don't sail nearly as much as they do on the Bay down here - save for Charleston - but narrower water courses and currents have a lot to do with that.

You won't get a slip for less than a few hundred/month down there, but you'll get more amenities than you have now. We have jellyfish (and even nettles I think), but nothing like the sea nettles can be in the middle bay and tribs. One nice feature will be Atlantic beaches, if you like some sand and surf, and not a whole lot of jellyfish action there.

There are many wonderful places between you and FL, so I encourage you to move around some. You'll like Beaufort NC if you like little shops, of course Charleston, St Simons/Jekyll, Fernandina. Great improvements to your winter, I'd say, although some still find it cold. Check out the tax situation, so you don't get a surprise tax bill. Another good reason to move around some.

It can be brutal down there in the summer, and like others said, you won't be hanging out in the cockpit at dusk or dawn as they will eat you up. Winter is awesome, in my opinion.

No opinion on Beaufort SC for crime rate, but doubt the crime is centered around the yachting facilities. I would not worry too much about that beyond typical precautions. Hilton Head itself is kind of exclusive.

Have fun-

Cheoah

Thank you for the great info
We live 40 minutes from the Ocean and spend the hot summer days there
Bugs are bad here on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and omg taxes are out if control here
Possibly we could live aboard a year or so and find our new home
