Hello & 'The Dove'

The book and the National Geographic articles of the real folks involved is what motivated me.

My son grew up with those magazines always lying around the house.

I used to think he had such a great boat, but it was pretty rough.

The pictures in the National Geographic prove this. One picture even shows his replacement mast which was 4'-5' too tall. The Big Dove was so much better.

I don't know about getting a copy but I watched it free with Amazon Prime so if you don't have prime it might cost you a couple of dollars

This thread brings a smile to my face.

My dad gave me "Dove" for Christmas when I still had two years of school to go. Needles to say, the book plus the National Geographic articles messed up my brains forever. I must have re read that book a dozen times by the time I sat my final school exam. And during the exams came my English paper essay topic, wait for it, "You are sailing singlehanded accross the Atlantic and about to make landfall at the island of St Helena. Write an extract from your dairy" . I could not believe my luck. I just wrote and wrote. Robin Lee Graham would have been proud of me! Got my best marks EVER for any exam.

I am writing this in my study, and there is the book, signed by my dad, Christmas, December 1972. Next to it the three National Geographic magazines covering his voyage.
10 years later in 1982 I completed my solo passage accross the South Atlantic, Punta del Este,Uruguay to Cape Town, South Africa.
Yep, I too was inspired by Dove, the books, the mags and the (rather poor) movie.
