Hello & 'The Dove'

The three National Geographic articles were really enjoyable mainly because of the pictures. I have worn those magazines out looking at them.

My avatar of Graham was on the cover of the April 1969 Issue that I bought for 50 cents in Tennessee back in the 80's. The other two were October 1968 and October 1970.

The real challenge for Robin Lee Graham and Patti though was their trying to adjust after returning to the US which was covered in the second book. (I think it was called Home is the Sailor)

Hi Jeff and welcome to the CF - from sunny Durban.
All I remember from the "Dove" was the cat or dog the was sitting in the fold of the mainsail and the wind swung the boom over and the animal fell in the water and a shark came along ............... although my memory is somewhat rusty from the sea air.

How does it occur that some of us liked the movie and found it quite inspiring to you interpreting our liking for it "as the greatest movie ever made"?

Or is that just your sense of humour.

Dont recall anyone saying "greatest movie ever made", but it definitely inspired me as a young 11 year old boy to start sailing with my dad. Imagine what sort of film could be made now with the modern effects. The part that stood out for me about the Dove was the footage all shot on location at some of the best sailing areas in the world. And Deborah Raffin's eyes. :-) (As Patti.)

As I said earlier, there were a few 'Doves' that were used to shoot the film. The original Dove that started the journey with Robin, I believe, was lost at sea.

The Dove which I have located was the Dove used to film all of the Footage in Durban, Cape Town and along the east Coast. A friend of Robin actually saw the boat and met the new owner Lionel, and sent Robin a picture, and in Robin proceeded to send a signed photograph of himself on the boat when he was a young kid doing the trip. Lionel has that photograph framed and on his wall.

Hi Jeff , watching " The Dove " definitely planted the seed in my head way back then and here we are today into our second year of cruising in Brazil and loving it .

By the way , our land home is in Port Owen , Cape West Coast .

But my most emotional experience was watching the story of a 16 year old attempting to sail around the world on a 24 ft sloop, the Dove. So the movie was relevant. very relevant. Because thats where the passion began.
