Endless Summer... Best Place for a Second Sailboat?

Five years ago in Cartegena, Spain, I met a 70 year old fellow from New Zealand who had been living an "Endless Summer" lifestyle for the previous seventeen years; he'd spent summers in the Mediterranean aboard his sailboat, then returned to New Zealand each each year to spend the rest of the year enjoying another six months of summer.

Presently, we find ourselves owning two sailboats, so the possibility exists for us to station our Oyster 53 someplace warm like the Eastern Caribbean or someplace else to get away from the New England winters at least for a few months. The 62 is heading to the Med where there's still plenty to see.

Just looking for ideas at this point, where's the perfect place with lot's to see between November-April with plenty of free anchorages, low crime and good haul out facilities outside hurricane alley? My wife has given the green light to explore the possibility since we're just three years away from full retirement.

The San Blas islands of Panama tick those boxes...and then some. Good haul out is a day sail away at Linton Bay Marina.

Amazing place, we are now on our 4th season here and thinking of at least 1 more.

November is a touch early for best weather, rainy season winds down about January and the seasonal trade winds fill in, but some cruisers stay here year round.

Now at anchor off Yansaladup, San Blas. Just Google Earth the area around the way point below (our approximate position)....wow!

Two boats, 62’ and 53’. Holy cow, thought I was nuts.

Two boats, 44’ and 33’, both Steel. 44 is in Carribean, we will put her up in the hard for hurricane season. The 33’er is in Newfoundland, Canada where we also have a small cabin in my Mother’s home town. Evans Starzinger and Beth Leonard seem to think the 3 best places to sail are: New Zealand, Chilean Channels, and Notre Dame Bay, Newfoundland although I’m partial to Bonavista Bay and have yet more to discover around the island and in Labrador.

Haul out might be an issue. But somehow I don’t think my idea will much match your idea. At least I’m fully retired.

Good luck, even though you are already lucky to have such “problems”.

Apparently Im a little less crazy than both of you, one 33, one 35, and one skiff.

One on the Rio Dulce in Guatemala and one in Panama.

Thanks for the tips on Panama. Anyone have any info on Granada, Trinidad or ?? What can expect to pay to keep the boat out of the water in the off season in a secure shipyard? I'm used to paying less than 2000 euros for six months in Italy.

Have you considered the great barrier reef, Australia? Perhaps the Cates may be able to give relevant advice.

The Grenadines. Relatively unspoilt, great sailing, Grenada for haul out has plenty of yards.

Re: Endless Summer... Best Place for a Second Sailboat?

My father began doing the endless summer thing with two Albin Vega's. One on Penobscot Bay and one based in Marsh Harbor, Bahamas. He did it for 10 years. Something to be said with having two of the same boat re. repairs, parts, knowledge, swapping.

Oh no, just what I need... justification for taking on another boat.
But wait! I seem to recall that the original plan for this boat was to station it at a different vacation destination each season. Somehow, there are always too many “projects” that need to be done, such that I can’t bear to keep it more than a short drive from the workshop. *sigh*.

New Zealand.
I prefer the south island because few people and yachts venture down there and it is stunningly beautiful. Incredibly beautiful.

The north island is fantastic as well and has good facilities. NZ is just a wonderful place for sailing.

ashore is great as well. You can see fantastic sights without a crowd of people, ski a glacier, fly an ultralight, white water raft, beautiful hiking, even has a reef you can dibe on, all in beautiful countryside and friendly folks.

A bit socialistic but worth it for beauty.

Re: Endless Summer... Best Place for a Second Sailboat?

I would suggest that you use Grenada as a base down here in the Eastern Caribbean as there is a lot of fun social happenings for cruisers on this island with organized buses, etc. to make life so easy and the local people are super friendly.

Grenada also has an excellent haul out facility at Clarkes Court Boatyard with a huge travel lift "the hulk".

I have been based in Grenada for 9 years as many cruisers have (we all came for a visit and never left!) plus you can then explore up island and return to Grenada for hurricane season.

As long as you are wary of a couple of the islands such as Canwuan, St Lucia and St Vincent, then all the rest of the islands are relatively safe.

Australia. Huge coast, thousands of anchorages, tropical to temperate, there's the Great Barrier reef, low crime....

Interesting idea of endless summer done by having two boats. I always hoped to achieve it with just one (nonstationary) boat.
