Don't Want a Blue Water Boat

We have a sailing boat but I wish I could upgrade her to a better ("more blue water") boat. I am not sure I would want a proper blue water boat because we already have a boat and once you have done many miles in one it sorts becomes like a worn shirt or a pair of good shoes: maybe not the cleanest, maybe not the best BUT fit and comfortable. And you know how to fix it up ... and you know when the time to fix it comes ... ;-)

And there is nothing sado-, maso- nor ego- about me wanting a proper blue water boat. Simply, the way we sail it is either open water passages or not at all. We do not 'cruise' in one of the meanings of the word; we rather go from one side of an ocean to another and this ocean going part counts to us most. Hence, if I were a rich(-er) man, yabidibidibi ... ;-)

I voted blue water boat because it's the boat we have.

I want to be able to go when and where I want or need to go.

The boat will be our home soon, we don't want any more limitations than needed.

We may never use those capabilities, but it's nice to have them.

Is there a preferred paint for making the water blue? If one carries that on board and uses it doesn't that make any boat a blue water boat?

I think the question should be..
Is the Owner/Skipper Blue Water capable.. its been proved just about any Boat is Blue Water capable.. anything discussed along that line is just Bullshite..

as for blue water, well, from where I'm sitting, it looks blue from the shore all the way to the horizon. Yeah, I want a boat that can sail in that blue water.
I've seen brown water, and green water, and gray water....

but it's all blue here. Except for the turquoise beach cat water. Perfect place for the new MacGregor 26 with hydrofoils. Supposedly can make it to Ireland and back before dark....

Not everyone's needs are the same.

And you are right -- I sail fairly often in "real crappy weather and experience just miserable conditions". The furthest South I've been in the last 12 months is 50N, and I spent a couple months above 60N. Not exactly a tropical paradise Therefore, naturally, my needs are different from yours.

This is entirely natural.

Yep, and he has almost zero sailing skill according to the good fellows over on Sailing Anarchy but has sailed the thing (actually the second one) from Alaska to Hawaii to San Francisco and then to Pago Pago I believe.

Probably skewed based on ratio of numbers, but I notice that most ocean rescues appear to involve large, so called bluewater, vessels where's heaps of sub 30 footers seem to cross oceans under the radar without incident.
