Re: Life raft found frozen-3 missing

Must have been runoff from the Vodka Ice Shelf.

Hope they are OK. It's sobering that they were under 20 miles away from a science base, but it didn't really help them.

An update on the search for Beserk and some background on the vessel and crew. No bodies found but the three crew are being considered to be victims.

Methinks he broke a few more things than 'protocols'.... rules of seasons, weather and common sense come to mind....

Re: Bærserk, Missing in Rossøy, McMurdo

Anyone know if it's just voyages to the Antarctic that require Norwegians to ask permission before embarking? Any other nations require this?

Re: Bærserk, Missing in Rossøy, McMurdo

I'm not sure what the requirements are for private citizens traveling to Antarctica. The Antarctic Treaty of 1959 governs all activities on the continent and requires environmental impact assessments before activities occur. My guess is that just showing up with some quad bikes intending to go to the Pole is a violation of the treaty of which Norway is a charter member. Beyond that question, it was lunacy to atempt a journey to the Pole at this time of year. South Pole station closed for the winter on Feb 15th leaving a winterover staff of 49 people to maintain the station and operate the science projects. The reason it closes then is because the weather gets too cold to allow flights (-60 degrees f) and it also tends to get stormier at this time of year. To describe the weather as brutal is an understatement. It is an extremely dangerous environment and deadly to those who go improperly prepared and equipped. There is a three month window for adventurers to try to get to Pole and they came as the window closed
