Alternatives to OEM

Hello all:

Recently a friend of mine and I were talking about the thread on this forum asking if volvos are really volvos and decided to build a new website addressing this issue on a much broader scale. The goal of the website is to try and reign in some of the ridiculous prices we all pay for parts. What we are hoping for is as much feedback from this and other boating groups about direct replacements for OEM parts and any alternative compatible parts that can work in a pinch. Items like raw water pumps. Oil and fuel filters, glow plugs, injectors, gaskets, autopilot drive belts, fuel tank replacements, refrigerator gaskets etc, along with where you found the best deal on said parts. This information has the potential to benefit everybody that visits this group.

Here is a for instance of what Im looking for.

Yanmar 2GM20F

SEA WATER PUMP YAN721575-42702. Retail $479.20
Direct replacement Johnson Pump F4B-903. Retail $320.00 Pentair STA-RITE and BERKELEY – Quality Water Pumps
Note this is the exact same pump Yanmar has removed any reference to the actual maker Johnson Pump so you would pay their exorbitant price.

Northern Lights M673L3 genset
Oil Filter NL-2408001 13.50
Direct replacement Fram PH2951 available everywhere $5.79

If you know what engine model you have do you know who actually manufactured it?
If so please share, maybe there are other options for parts other than the crazy high priced stuff that the OEMs rebrand repaint and hide all the important part cross references available to everybody but boaters.

A list off all marinized engines and the engines they are based on would be nice to have listed also.

Thanks in advance to all who help us in this endeavor.

Re: Alternatives to OEM

A couple of weeks ago I was reading somewhere about this very same issue. They had listed about 50 items that could be had for as little as 10% compared to boat chandlers.
