Yes, it does matter, and thank you but I'd rather be upside down on top of the water than right side up at the bottom of it. Lead sinks, last time I checked

First off all boats can sink even catamarans. So taking that argument completely out of the mix that leaves you with capsizing. (in this example anyways).

I've been knocked down in a 30ft catalina (water pouring into the cockpit) she weather helmed and came right back up. If I had done the same thing in a catamaran I would have been screwed. ( now I know it is harder to do on a catamaran but it is still possible) and before you get all hurt I love catamarans. I've chartered a couple and enjoyed them very much.

However if I were to be crossing an ocean I would feel much more comfortable in a mono knowing that if things get bad I can button up the hatches and if we get rolled the "lead" will eventually get the big metal pole pointing upwards again and I can continue on.

This is absolutely true. Most monohulls found on the bottom of the ocean are indeed keel down and mast up.

Very questionable use of theories and probabilities aside, Tamicatana's question is very relevant.
Which cat? Some designs do sink, some are highly unlikely to sink and some wont.
Which mono? lose your keel and you won't self right, get swamped, you may founder etc.
Neither mono or multi are bulletproof or idiot proof. Both can be victims of bad luck or bad judgement.
The question of which type is safer is unanswerable, it's too general for any rational discussion and sweeping views are not much use to anyone.
Any well found blue water prepared vessel of either type will survive equally well, assuming they are properly handled.
'Buttoning up' applies to both types.
Cats and tri's have ridden out cyclones, typhoons and the roaring forties where some monos haven't.
Mono's have survived despite their crews and some have disappeared without trace.
More monos have crossed oceans because they've been around longer and there are more of them.
Thousands of cats are making passages as I type this quite successfully, despite the prejudice of many naysayers.
To the OP, if you prefer living on a cat get a cat, if you prefer living on a mono get a mono.
Neither is 'safest' to cross oceans, they can both be very safe or death traps, it depends on how they are prepared and sailed.
Me, I prefer cats but I don't knock monos or the people who like them and I'll repeat, the question as put is unanswerable!

Statistically they are the same. Safety would be no factor at all in my choice between cat and mono, especially if the job is just to get across the Atlantic, which will not involve survival conditions if you pick the right season and do decent weather routing.

Cat vs mono is a purely emotional choice, which is why it is utterly pointless to argue about which is better. I like monos myself - prefer the way they feel and prefer the way they are laid out, but others prefer cats for the same (or opposite) reasons. Variety makes the world go round. You'll have to make your own choice.

Of course it matters! Some cat's are rubbish, some mono's are rubbish. A good cat' vs a crap mono', you'd choose the cat'. And vice versa.
