St. Thomas Moorings

Does anyone have information, or know where to find it, concerning putting down a private mooring in St. Thomas? There seems to be a big growth in the amount of private moorings in the bays and harbors there. Thanks

Re: St. Thomas Moorings

As this could be problematic, I’d contact the USVI Department of Planning and Natural Resources

Cyril E. King Airport
Terminal Building, 2nd Fl.
St. Thomas, VI 00802
Phone: (340) 774-3320
or
45 Estate Mars Hill
Frederiksted, VI 00840
Phone: (340) 773-1082

Mooring permits are issued to an owner of a registered vessel. In order to obtain a permit for anchoring or mooring an applicant is required to apply in person, through a resident agent or through any representative duly authorized to complete application procedures in the owner's behalf. A first time applicant is required to submit with the application a current coloured photograph of the vessel and an affidavit executed by the applicant fully setting forth the facts to support the applicants claim of ownership.

Gord has covered it well. Are you here now or thinking about moving a boat here for long term?

Boat is at American Yacht Harbor, but looking for a long term solution when I can give up the work world.

What can I expect to spend on a mooring for a 33' annually?

About $165. To qualify that. You have to jump through hoops to get an anchoring permit while you apply for a mooring permit. Then you need to install your own ground tackle. Or you could be like many here and just drop your anchor for free. See here http://www.dpnr.gov.vi/downloadform....ORING%20PERMIT

And be prepared to fight the locals. They don't particularly like people just dropping a mooring in anywhere. Some brother of someone's cousin who's other cousin just happens to be the DA will have a problem with it for no particular reason except you didn't talk to him first for permission to drop it in a location they was once owned by his family 100 years ago.

I deal with this quite a bit first hand in the VI. We recently had all three of our moorings stolen, and I am sure it will happen again.
