Looking for buddy boats, Dog island to Clearwater

I will be sailing across the big bend of Florida in a few days. I plan on leaving from Dog Island and sailing all night to Clearwater then down to Ft Myers. Any one else planning this trip ? I'm in Panama City tonight heading to Port St Joe tomorrow. I'm on a S2 11.0

Thanks,
Mike

A couple of sailboats and several trawlers in St. Joe now, waiting for you and the next weather window.

Thats good news. Where is everyone planning to leave from. I will be getting to Port St Joe Wednesday evening. It would make the trip across so much nicer with a few other boats in sight.

Most will leave from Carrabelle or Dog Island. Tyson's Harbor at Dog Island is one of our favorite places, so we always plan a day or two there.

More trawlers (4) arrived today in St. Joe today, so it looks like a big group for you to leave with.

If you have questions, I'm the only sailboat on the West dock in St. Joe.

Having done that trip this summer, I second that Dog is the place to leave from. I left straight from PC, but came back via Dog Island and spent a day there, was nice to break up the trip.

Thanks for the info. We are leaving early in the morning from PC and should get to St Joe marina around 4pm ish Dec 3rd.

We are planning to take the canal up and over through Apalachicola to Dog Island on Thursday.

Most of that trip on the ICW is pretty. Enjoy! We've done Dog Island to Clearwater Beach both ways now. The first trip took 27 hours. We had a nice NW wind to start, but finished on a glass smooth Gulf of Mexico and no wind. Coming back, ran into some unexpected NW winds that took awhile to go east. That trip took 33 long hours.

The trawlers will most likely leave late afternoon to get there in the morning. They really won't be helpful to buddy boat with I don't think. I doubt they will leave before Saturday anyway, since the wind and waves will be on the beam (trawlers don't like that). Saturday to Sunday looks good for now, but be prepared to motor a lot.

Have a safe passage.

Dang! Miss you guys and Port St. Joe. Leave a light on for us. We're heading back your way either in the spring or fall....just not sure yet.

Mike, We're in Carrabelle, but will be going over to Alligator Harbor on Friday and crossing to Steinhatchee on Saturday morning. There should be a group of Loopers gathering at Dog Island on Saturday to leave sometime Saturday mid day to afternoon. It looks like a good window both Saturday and Sunday and even into Monday. We have little faith in the NWS forecasts so by Friday night all bets could be off. But that is how it looks today.

What is your air draft, less than 50'?

There are no 50 foot bridges between Port St. Joe and Dog Island. There is a 50 foot bridge between Panama City and Port St. Joe on the inside. Chuck

I'm motoring right now in the gulf to St Joe. From St Joe to Apalachicola I think they are 65 foot bridges I draft 4.5

No issues at all between Port St. Joe and Dog Island for you with bridges or depths. Have a safe trip. Chuck
