Establishing Base in Cancun area

In the process of buying a 35 ft cat and establishing a base in the Cancun area and sail around the Mexico coast to learn the ropes. Looking for advise on where to set up in that area and what will I encounter. Would like to hook up with someone that has spent some time there.

You won't have much of a choice here. You will end up back in the lagoon on Isla Mujeres somewhere. Perfectly fine place to use as a base of operations but for hurricanes anyway. You can deal with anything else that comes along in there. The holding is mud and there are some funky marinas also. Of course there is a very nice marina too.

Consider the Rio Dulce in Guatemala. Safe. Fresh water. Marinas are very inexpensive and there's no hurricane danger. Belize is only a few hours north and the Bay Islands of Honduras are less than 24 hours east.

We based out of Puerto Aventuras for a year. A little south of Cancun but easy drive from airport and we enjoyed the community.

Re: Establishing Base in Cancun area

In the Cancun area I'm very partial to Isla Mujeres. It has easy access from down town Cancun by ferry and gets you away from the hustle of the city. If you use a marina in the lagoon it is as good a hurricane hole as there is in that area. Any of the marinas out of the bay are more exposed but fine out of hurricane season. I liked Marina Del Sol and spent a couple of years there. Not fancy and no pool but Qualberto lives right at the end of the dock and keeps a close eye on things. He also has several well set moorings that they run lines to if a big storm is threatening to spread the loads away from the dock.

Everyone there puts pilings in with a hose to "water jet" them in rather than driving them. I would ask how long the pilings that you tie to have been in. Less than a year means they would not be too sturdy in a real storm.

Lots of great cruising in the area.

I have heard good things about the Rio Dulce and regret not getting down there. However the air service to Cancun with great ferry service to the isla makes this area very easy to get to and from.

Re: Establishing Base in Cancun area

We are currently in Isla Mujeres - been here on and off for a few weeks. We also went down to Puerto Morales, and Puerto Aventura. Take a look at my blog - there is info on all of these spots posted over the last couple of weeks. Message me if you need anything specific.
