Charger/Passage to Guatemala?

Hello all, I apologize as we live inland and are completely ignorant so I don't know if what I am asking is possible.

My family is moving to Guatemala. My husband won't fly. (Have you seen the A Team, and Mr. T?) Driving through Mexico is not considered smart due to the violence.

We are searching for someone who has a vessel large enough to accommodate all of us (7-8). We would like to travel from a gulf state southward by way of water. We are not seeking a luxury cruise, just safe passage and a fun adventure.

Please respond with any and all suggestions, and if you are able to supply this service, an idea on what you would charge. We could bring all our own food and help as desired. We are not seeking to be served or catered to! actually we cook pretty well and do not drink or smoke.

In case you need to know, it is my husband and I, my brother and his wife, and our 3-4 children - depending on who moves with us. We know there are international travel laws, such as passports, etc. We would hope to travel 2-4 months from now, (April 2011).

Thank you so much!

Re: Charger/Passage to Guatemala?

You can book passage on a freighter heading that way.
- - Private recreational boats cannot take paying passengers without getting into serious difficulties. It it is done not strictly by the book the owner of the boat could be charged with human trafficking which is right up there with terrorist activities and smuggling.
- - Driving through Mexico is not that dangerous as the media makes it out to be.
- - You don't just wander into a country these days, you need visas and if immigrating need to be processed by the destination country. That all takes time and money.
- - Check out ocean passage opportunities on ships and freighters, but be sure to have all your documents in order along with visas and/or immigration papers.

Re: Charger/Passage to Guatemala?

We are well aware of the paperwork requirements and are well into that process.

My husband won't fly... and All local Mexican contacts advise against going through Mex as it has intensified in the last year or so.

Thanks, Ill try to find freighter stuff online I suppose.
