Bahamas cruising

Hi All,
Any comments about a 7' draft cruising Bahamian waters? I would like to work my way SE through the chain on to Puerto Rico. Staniel Key, Georgetown and time in Exumas are on the voyage plan.
Thank you and regards,
Bill, Carol and Gen

Re: Bahamas cruising

On that route in the lee of the Exumas, I have seen sustained periods under 7'.

Not easy but can be done. Down to Black Point (just south of Staniel) not much of a problem but after that it gets a bit skinny to stay on the Bank but still can be done if you're careful. You won't get any further south than Cave Cay on the Bank side. You might have to anchor a bit further out in spots but you should not let the seven foot draft deter you from cruising the Exumas.

If you get copies of the Explorer Charts you will have all the information on where you can take your 7 ft draft boat. There charts are quite accurate.

We spent a couple of years south (2004-2006) and cruised the Exumas extensively with a 7' draft. You'll be fine, just go slow. Never had any issues at all, just anchored a little further out then the folks with 5'. Our friends on a Swan 46 with 9' also spent a few weeks cruising the area. As an earlier post mentioned, just get the Explorer Charts first.

I also have a 6'9" draft. I have my Explorer charts but am still a bit concerned.

We will be Sailing to and thru the Exuma's on our 38 Catalina June 21th thru July 10

Looking for another cruiser to do the crossing.. 2 boats are better than one..

Miami to the Sampson cay... Anyone crossing?
