Lake Worth to Nassau
Hey everyone:
I am at Lake Worth about to make the crossing to Nassau tomorrow 5/21. Is there anyone else looking to make the trip, weather permitting? I'd love to have a buddy boat.
I am also looking for any advice on making the crossing. This will be my first time crossing the gulf stream, and I would appreciate any advice you may have.
Thanks!

If you're looking for a buddy boat it's a good idea to state what boat you're in, sail, power, size? Buddy boats usually travel at about the same speed.

Re: Lake Worth to Nassau
Unless you are on a fast boat (read motorboat) you're too far north to cross the stream efficiently, and for that matter you will need two days to reach Nassau.
Do a search for gulf stream crossing, there are lots of threads about it.

Re: Lake Worth to Nassau
Thanks for the advice so far. I'm in a 31 ft southern cross averaging 5-6 knots.

Re: Lake Worth to Nassau
head a little south and you can check into west end. then you can head northeast to abaco, then go south to nassau that way. Gulf Stream runs north at 2 plus knots so you are going to have to take that into consideration. west palm straight to nassau will be very hard for you. better motoring south till you hit fort lauderdale then go from there if you want a straight shot at nassau.

Re: Lake Worth to Nassau
go offshore to ft laudeedah, the head to hens and chickens (n. of bimini)...the light there works and the waypoint from the explorer chart is spot on, from there to mackie shoal, nw channel (light is out but again the explorer chart waypoint is good) then on to nasshole...have fun..

Stay in port if the winds out of the North, you won't like crossing the Stream in a Norther. I usually leave early and plan to anchor out a few miles West of the tongue. From there it's an easy sail to Chub or Nassau to clear customes. Where are you going after Nassau?

Re: Lake Worth to Nassau
If crosing from lakeworth I,have been told that the BAHAMAS require you to check in at the first port you come into proxcimity of.That said clear at West End head SE stopping along the way in the Berry Chain lots of Good Anchorages and Good Fishing. If I,were leaving I,would be on my way, cross tonight from the weather sources I,have read don't get much better.Considering your boat ect you should plan on 13 to 15 hours, mostaly motoring,Have fun wish I,were going.

Thank you all for the advice! I'd like to do what casual is suggesting. It works best with my plans. Does anyone see any reason why I shouldn't head to West End to cross the gulf stream then head south to the bahamas. From what the weather looks like, that may be my best bet? From what I understand the easier crossing would be from a more southern starting point, but the weather may not allow for that?
Thanks again everyone!

Re: Lake Worth to Nassau
jchassee,Have made the crossing Lakeworth to WestEnd several times.Watch out for North and southbound freighters ,S Bound usually around 4 to 10 miles out,N bound around mid stream 25 miles or so.Occasionally you'll have one s bound on the East side of the Stream.Winds down stars are bright,Great Night for a crossing

Re: Lake Worth to Nassau
Lots of good advice here. Leaving from as far south as feasible is always a good idea. With that said, I've sailed from West End to Nassau before and it took 33 hours. Had exceptionally good weather for it.
Take the best weather window you can and remain flexible. Don't stop at West End if you don't have to.
Lots of cruise ships in the area, so watch for them at night.
Also, make sure you call the Nassau harbormaster in advance to get permission to enter the harbor.
Safe sailing,
