There also appear to be many areas where they would not be CBD. I'm curious where it happened, and if the cruise ship was displaying CBD signals? No signals, no CBD.

Here is what the OP posted after all the various responses which more or less unanimously said he was wrong and explained why he was wrong "I stand corrected! Thanks for the responses." Ok.....Chalk this up to a learning experience even if perhaps it was regardless of technical details, rules etc etc etc. I am reasonably certain that had there been a collision who would have "lost" at sea, regardless of who may have won in Admiralty Court--and in which jurisdiction? So this all in all was a positive experience that shows how CF can be of help to fellow sailors and make the sailing safer for all of us. Lesson learned--stay clear of the really big ships no matter where you are.If I am going to be constrained by draft it will be a Heineken or a Yuengling and definitely not while at sea as it will lead to an inability to maneuver.!

I've been sailing for ever and no matter what the rule if bigger and usual if not I always move way before there's ever a question that way I can just keep sailing. A different direction just means I get to stay out longer.

Seamanship being a skill, or skill set, think "lack of seamanship" is more of the term that comes to mind, rather than "poor" or "bad" seamanship. You may lack seamanship, but you can't "do it" badly, you can only lack it.


Kind of like not knowing what regulations might be getting violated, since if one really knew the regulations, one would also KNOW whose regulations were being violated. Not knowing who to call (ignoring when or whether to call) might be called a lack of seamanship as well, mightn't it?


And as any racer can tell you, if you clear the other vessel with enough room to drop a playing card between the hulls? You've cleared. What's the fuss?!
