I would say you are lucky to even get a response.

Re: Bad Seamanship

I wish I had thought to start this thread I just bet that would have really led to some entertainment

BTW - those posting all high and mighty with rules quotes, be real you don't need no rules in this case. I bet in the end the OP just naturally knew what he should do.

North of the island in 80' puts you within 1/3 mile of a 30 depth contour in a region of < 60' rock. To the east the shoaling is abrupt south of Isla Culebrita.

SE is the Bajos Grampus and I would be on edge to take my 6' draft boat there.

SW is a broad plain at 80' but You would need to set up for the La Pasa De Los Cayos Lobos so altering course could be a problem (not saying it could not be done....) I would not even try Pasaje De Hermanos.

Which leaves Pasaje Lavador to the NW.

Yes, CBD appears to be plausible.
There also appear to be many areas where they would not be CBD. I'm curious where it happened, and if the cruise ship was displaying CBD signals? No signals, no CBD.

Re: Bad Seamanship

Here is what the OP posted after all the various responses which more or less unanimously said he was wrong and explained why he was wrong "I stand corrected! Thanks for the responses." Ok.....Chalk this up to a learning experience even if perhaps it was regardless of technical details, rules etc etc etc. I am reasonably certain that had there been a collision who would have "lost" at sea, regardless of who may have won in Admiralty Court--and in which jurisdiction? So this all in all was a positive experience that shows how CF can be of help to fellow sailors and make the sailing safer for all of us. Lesson learned--stay clear of the really big ships no matter where you are.If I am going to be constrained by draft it will be a Heineken or a Yuengling and definitely not while at sea as it will lead to an inability to maneuver.!

Re: Bad Seamanship

I've been sailing for ever and no matter what the rule if bigger and usual if not I always move way before there's ever a question that way I can just keep sailing. A different direction just means I get to stay out longer.

Re: Bad Seamanship

I think I'd read this first:

Otoh, I may just try to miss the cruise ship.

(I'm sure that everybody on CF knows about the Amazon reviews for this book, but in case you don't: http://www.amazon.com/Avoid-Huge-Shi.../dp/0870334336)

Here lies Tommy O'Shea
Who died defending his 'Right of Way'.
He may have been right,
He may have been wrong,
But he's just as dead,
Even though he was wrong!
An old seaman's proverb that I recall from my first skipper back in the fifties... Nothing much changes it appears. Phil

Re: Bad Seamanship

Seamanship being a skill, or skill set, think "lack of seamanship" is more of the term that comes to mind, rather than "poor" or "bad" seamanship. You may lack seamanship, but you can't "do it" badly, you can only lack it.

Kind of like not knowing what regulations might be getting violated, since if one really knew the regulations, one would also KNOW whose regulations were being violated. Not knowing who to call (ignoring when or whether to call) might be called a lack of seamanship as well, mightn't it?

And as any racer can tell you, if you clear the other vessel with enough room to drop a playing card between the hulls? You've cleared. What's the fuss?!

Re: Bad Seamanship

sailormn,

Good on ya for coming back and "standing corrected." I wish I could have found a way to express myself that wasn't sarcastic. That biting was unkind.

In the ASA Basic Keel Boat text book. One of the first things they cover is this.
They call it the Rule of Tonnage. They make it very clear.
