Is Thesalonika a Good Place to get some Maint. Done?

I was planning to wait till Turkey - but am needing to repair my heat exchanger (replace worn out copper section and fit new anodes) as well as replace windows (old ones cracked/crazed and leaking as well)

Thesalonika was not on my original list , but we are 1 day away now at Porto Koufos.

I also need to repair my cooker - the gauze is a bit rusty... an old Sea-Gear , but I suspect a new replacement may be in order.

thanks for all input

Kris

There is a very active greek group on the ybw liveaboard forum. I would ask the question there.

I have seen a couple of 'repairs' and rebuilds done on boats in Greece and Croatia. If I were to judge by that, I would rather ship a reliable specialist or else hire a skilled fellow sailor.

In fact the repair you mention sounds very home doable.

I second the comments about repair quality in Greece. I had the worst welding I've ever seen done by a 'qualified welder' in Syros. You really have to know some-one who is good. Turkey on the other hand, has some really good mechanics in places like Marmaris, but again you have to know who to ask.

Remember, NQR ("Not Quite Right") was invented in Turkey, but they also understand iteration. Do not pay them until its done right, and you'll have no problems.

Ask me if you want some specific recommendations.

Thanks all - am doing an emergency seal replacement and re-welding a snapped adjustment bolt + hopefully some heat exchanger work.
Was hoping for a quote on new windows - old crazed stuff is also leaking now.

Turkey it is...

cheers K

Re: Is Thesalonika a Good Place to get some Maint. Done?

OK : report back...

Stuff still has to be ordered from Athens (Jabsco seals) with 2 day delivery ???
The marina sucks - they are an un-helpfull bunch - turns out the local boat-shops are "not-allowed" to advertise their services at the marina ???
If I had found the place I am using 2 days ago - I would have the parts in my hand !!!!

Good news is I found a Really Good welding shop. Guy has a family business and really stepped out to help - good price too.

his contact details are kokkinos-welding.gr email kokkinoslaz@yahoo.gr tel 2310.515.369 and about 5 minutes walk from the bus terminus.

He does propellers too - and thats not an easy thing to get done.

We will be outa here tomorrow - heading east.......

cheers Kris
