Azores/Canaries Liability Requirement?

A question to any U.S. yachts that have visited the Azores and/or Canaries' marinas recently; was proof of liability insurance required by the authorities?

3rd party insurance is all you will be asked for,and is mandatory in all european marinas

Re: Azores/Canaries Liability Requirement?

We were in the Azores last summer on our way to the Med and EVERY marina wanted to see an insurance form... most want to see an "original" copy. If fact, throughout the Med this last year (all the way to Israel), every marina wanted to see proof of insurance. This is also true of port police when tying up to town quays... So, in my opinion, it is a must.

Re: Azores/Canaries Liability Requirement?

Most insurance brokers (at least IMIS does) can provide an insurance declaration document that specifies the coverage in multiple languages. My experience 7 years ago in the Azores, Portugal and Spain was the same as JohnandTessa. The single page declaration document satisfied the marinas I stopped in.

FWIW, Americans refer to this as liability insurance. Europe and elsewhere it is commonly known as 3rd party insurance, but that term is not used in the USA. All comprehensive policies include liability coverage in our experience. Every marina we have stayed anywhere from the Caribbean west-around to the Med has required proof of liability insurance, or 3rd party if one prefers that term.
