Re: Tortola BVI hit with 206 MPH wind gusts

For anyone who is trying to get information from Nanny Cay. Just received this from a group on facebook with family or friends on Nanny Cay. It seems that only those with a Sat phone are able to make any outside contact.

......All the hard standing boats have been blown over and most boats in the marina have been destroyed. He is in the new condos facing the ocean and they have sustained minor flooding to the ground floor.
No electricity or water of course and it doesn't look liveable for the near future.

Someone asked - "what happens to all the boats?"

I would imagine that under normal circumstances they would be assessed, and either repaired or written off. Those written off would then be sold to by the insurance company for salvage/strap.

In this instance, I cannot see the insurance companies having the time or inclination to assess thousands of boats, and can see then just paying out on images/self assessment alone.

One of our Favorite places to go in the BVI is the Soggy Dollar Bar.

ITS GONE

Famous Soggy Dollar Bar in Jost Van Dyke, BVI after Hurricane Irma.
Sept 6th 2017

The 2nd picture is my crew and I at the Soggy Dollar Bar in Feb, 2016. Our Moorings 43 powercat is in the center of the picture.

We used the Soggy Dollar Webcam to position the boat right in the center of the webcam picture that morning.

I am the DUDE drinking the PAIN KILLER in the bright yellow.

Last time I was at Nanny Cay boat yard I was shocked that almost 95% of the boats on the hard, were mast up, and only about 15-20% of those were ratchet strapped to ground screws. Most boats were just on Brownell boat stands with the mast up. Images from St. Martin show a yard with a mast rack and most boats stored mast off and the majority are still up right..

That said the winds in this hurricane ripped spars clean off many hundreds of boats so there was not much anyone could to anyway. Cat 1, 2 or 3 prepare as best you can, Cat 4 & 5 make sure the insurance is paid...

This is actually Ivan's, but reports are that Soggy Dollar didn't fare much better. Basically anything on Jost that was a wooden structure is gone.

So sad. Still hoping to hear that everyone on the island is safe.

I read on one of the BVI Facebook boards that the people are safe, but pretty much everything on the island was leveled due to the low elevation.

I can only imagine the pain and suffering of our fellow sailors in the BVI. Hang in!

Re: Tortola BVI hit with 206 MPH wind gusts

This is the only update I've seen on Frenchman's Cay and Soper's Hole. If anyone knows anyone there with a Delorme or sat device that is out and about and willing to do a welfare check, please message me. We're trying to make contact with family there. Thanks.
